As much as I hate to give the guy any credit, he had elite handspeed, good timing, good power, good defensive skills, solid chin. He would have been elite had he stayed at 135-140. He could have been more than a gatekeeper at ww had he had the will to fight and risk getting hurt in exchanges, because he usually holds the edge in timing and handspeed over his opponents.
I don't think it's accurate to say he "boiled down" to 130 and especially 135. He's not even 5-7, which isn't tall for those divisions. He does have broad shoulders, but for perspective DeMarco is 5-10. I get aging out of 130 pretty quickly, but Broner should have had a 5-7 year run at 135. But instead he left the division in his early 20s and hasn't been back since. He was never going to amount to much above LW, albeit as mentioned he's still somewhat dangerous at 140. At 147, he's just a name.
To say that he doesn't have ANY elite talent is false. Maidana said that he's physically the strongest fighter that he ever faced. When he let his hands go, he's just as fast as anyone and he has a solid chin.
I think he did. Very smooth punching technique, good power, chin and speed (of hands). Can be flatfooted, gun shy, and not particularly hard to hit.
Actually 4... but 2 of those were vacant belts against pushovers that had no business fighting for a belt, and another a SD over by far the worst beltholder at the weight. And all this after receiving 2 gift decisions, make him one of the most (if not the most) fabricated multi division beltholder ever.
wow. he has one of the best chins we've seen in ages. elite at 130/135. we just saying anything now huh
I'll give him his due...he had a great chin and when he fought offensively as opposed to his discount Floyd style he looked great..flat footed as **** though and not hard to outwork...has showed alot of heart and bottle quite a few times..he's spent half his career fighting people bigger than him just for extra money... He could've been alot better though...and I don't like him...I'm sure he's arsed lol
His fundamentals are lousy, all he has is a good left hook and he`s very easy to counter which is why he doesn`t throw a lot of shots.
He’s elite at LW where he can impose his size, strength, chin, power - combined with his speed and some skills. He’s also not at a big height disadvantage which is the worst when using shoulder roll style.
Lopez, Tank, Loma and Garcia would toy with him, he never beat any fighters at their level, lightweight is a far stronger division than when Broner fought at 135, the guy was overrated and that`s that.
He's shown flashes of great talent. But that's about it. No consistency because he never took boxing serious like other greats have. I get the impression he felt he could just sleepwalk his way to the HOF.
Great? His hands were just a little quick, he never, ever showed flashes of being Ray Leonard or Benitez, the guy was clumsy.
