This is the only justification he has. HOWEVER, I hope he doesn't pick and choose WHICH TIME a mandatory is required. I seem to recall he had a charlo mandatory, just refused. And lets not forget, he dumped a MW belt at one point because the fight could not get made at 155.

It's just simply down to him wanting to be the undisputed Super Middleweight champion so if he has to deal with the mandatory to do that then that's what he has to do.

Coincided with the fact 13 months passed between the Kovalev and Smith fights so he wants to be active.

IF he does go for being undisputed, that will definitely change things.

Oh, yeah. But this is largely happening because Canelo wants to stay active. He was adamant about it.
It was similar with Fielding. Canelo spent an entire year on the sidelines, fought Golovkin and then said that he wants one more fight before the year is over.
It again happened with Kovalev. Canelo had multiple setbacks and in the end he was determined to get a fight done on that date, regardless of opponent.
And then came a 13 month layoff. Canelo had to push hard, or else he would have sat out the entirety of 2020.

So now he wants to stay active, wants to unify the belts and Yildrim was an easy fight to make. If Yildrim were in the way of the Saunders fight, Alvarez would have sidestepped him.
Mayweather did the same with Guerrero. "Hes the mandatory". Like you ever cared about that nonsense! It was just a convenient timing.
