Anyone interested in rewatching and rescoring this fight? 32 years ago this week February 24th 1989 (@Richard M Murrieta -I know you like dates ) Roberto Duran won a split decision over Iran Barkley. Was there any controversy over the decision? Does anyone have a scorecard Eye on the ring has about 1/4 that disagree with the result. I had it 116-112 Duran http://www.eyeonthering.com/boxing/steel-vs-stone-iran-barkley-vs-roberto-duran This content is protected anyone watch it live and in person? Remember watching it on TV? Or have any stories or memories to share? here it is for those who want to rewatch and score this: This content is protected This content is protected
cool deal...I am going to try it weekly (for the 4th or 5th time lol). So you got a week (or can come back any time) before another one goes up...till it falls apart lol. Good luck fishing bro. It’s always good to get away and be outdoors! Hopefully Kev will be back in March??? And can join in. Time will tell
Damn good fight. I remember it on TV. At one point Barkley clocked Duran a good one and Duran gave him an evil eye from hell. Talk about impending doom.
That Duran , well beyond his prime and best fighting weight was that competitive against a fighter known for his ruggedness and physicality is a vivid indication and reminder of the differences between a fighter universally considered one of the best to ever lace them on, and a fighter merely considered a good pro.
Love this fight. I have the poster of Duran after the bell on my wall (used to be my avatar too haha) For all the talk of Duran's machismo and ego, he fought this fight wonderfully, admitting Barkley was getting the better toe to toe and adjusting as such. His use of inside fighting, shoulder to shoulder should be something any aspiring slugger watches and studies. What a fighter
This is a pretty good round 1 (I will save my score till the end) that is not an easy round to score. Barkley does some good work behind a strong quick jab with plenty of snap as well as digging some good hooks to the body and hiking off the jab...his skill looks better than I sometimes give him credit for. Duran holds his own countering and making Barkley pay for each punch he lands, feinting and setting himself up for follow ups when Barkley reacts. Barkley catches Duran off balance and scores a solid left that does not hurt Duran but it looks good because Durans foot placement and Balance was off (something he did against DeJesus and Buchanan as well as much of his career...he was just good enough that very few could capitalize). Duran rocks Barkley and closes strong over the final 12 seconds of a close round...interested to see how everyone scored this round. I could see either guy or even.
perhaps that was round 3? Barkley clocks him good and Duran just kind of shrugs it off and stares him down before coming right back. Barkley to his credit takes a good pinch at the end of 3 and just smiled and danced it off pumping his jab in return. I had forgotten what a fun fight this was
It was an incredible performance by Duran because it may have been the best Iran Barkley I ever saw in that fight .. he was in shape. He used boxing skills well .. a damn good jab. A controlled aggression ... he was pretty fast and threw some amazing body shots .. it just goes to show the only way to beat the older Duran at 37 when he was in real shape was through dazzling speed like a Leonard or Hearns ... Hagler beat him for sure but did not come close to beating him up ... everything is styles but still it was an insane performance by Duran, one for the ages ...
it could have been 5, Barkley had him on the ropes and lands 2 solid Duran again just kind of shrugs it off and moves back in...I’m gonna stop guessing now lol
Through 6 *Hard to score rounds* that I could justify a lot of variance upon. I can see why it was a split decision. On another note I detest Joe Cortez...but so far this is one of his best jobs. Gotta give him props since I bash him at other times
I hope some of this forum rescores this fight this week. Through 7 rounds there is not one round that if you scored it differently, that I would complain. Every round has bern close and difficult to score with plenty of ebbs and flows and momentum shifts.
I really hope we get some scorecards on this one...I am not a fan of commentary and commentators but they have made a few points (prior to 10th) between 6/7 Clancy: He is gonna have to nail Barkley with some big punches to get himself back into this fight. 9th Duran has to be well behind don’t you think? Yeah I do at the end of 9 Durans best round: perhaps his best round in fight certainly in the last 5-6 rounds. I wonder how this forum would score this? I could actually see Barkley sweeping this fight or up 6-3 on some cards. But Duran is turning this around at this point. Barkley is cut over his left eye (small) and swelling as well (major) and his punches are not as sharp and crisp as earlier. I don’t seem to remember Barkley doing so well early as I have sensed this time...not that he has dominated or even controlled the fight...nearly every round but 8 (Barkley) 9 (Duran) have been hotly contested and difficult to score. edit: at the end of 10: I guess the big question is can Duran win a decision if he does not get a knockout...they still obviously believe he is behind by at least 2 or more rounds edit 2: I have not been scoring round by round but I would guess Duran is behind by at least a couple of rounds...
In the spirit of Fight of the week, I won't post an old card, I'll watch it again but the two times I've scored this (one for a previous fight of the week thread, I think) I had it 115-113 to Duran both times but scored 5 of the 7 rounds differently between the two cards. I have it in my personal top 10 fights.
yeah I just scored it again and will post it in a few. I think the 118-112 Duran card is a little wide but the other 2 cards seem to be in the ballpark of what I watched this time. the judges scored 1-2-3 even rounds on their respective cards...I have 6 debatable close rounds that could be scored for either guy. 116-112/113 seems very fair for either guy, I need to give Barkley some major props in this as well. He went to war and came up on the short end of a SD, but I could see him winning with no complaint from me. this fight is much better and more hotly contested than my memory recalled.
