Maxim was not known for his punching ability, but he was absolutely durable Hence his win against Floyd Patterson and would be loss to Ray Robinson. Ability was the deciding factor on your chances with Joey and I think that Hagler has enough of it to pull off a win against an ATG LHW in Joey.
Joey excelled at absorbing punishment, and this matchup would give him ample opportunity to show off that particular skill.
Fair enough. But to me that just underscores how absurd the idea that Floyd was or could have been some kind of ATG light heavyweight really is.
Maybe by today's standards, because all of today's heavyweights are fat and look like they have a daily regiment of steroids.
Maxim went the distance with better fighters who were closer to his weight or better. I think he pulls out a decision win.
Hard to say but I'm leaning towards Joey getting a split decision win. A fight where Hagler throws everything at Maxim but can't quite budge the big fella. Perhaps a little contested and not a popular decision at all.
While I see a very good fight, Marvelous Marvin Hagler was satisfied at 160 lbs like another great Carlos Monzon was, neither had weight issues and knew their limitations. Sugar Ray Robinson in 1952 came close to lifting Joey Maxim's crown, but was overcome by the extreme heat. This fight would replicate that fight except for the issue with the heat. I think that the excess weight would be a factor, slowing down the Marvelous one. Maxim by a split decision.
