This was a very close fight and many believe that Mercer did enough to win it or at least get a draw. Who won this fight? And do you think it warranted a rematch? I know it was a non title bout so a rematch wouldn't likely happen in reality but for the fact it was so close I think the question should be asked if there should have been a rematch.
MERCER: 2,3,7 HOLYFIELD 1,4,5,6,8,9,10. WITHERSPOON: 1,2,3,5,9. MERCER: 4,6,7,8,10. LEWIS: 3,4,6,7,8,9,10 MERCER 1,2,5. All good, close fights, shame Mercer didn't get the nod in any of them.
It was a close fight indeed, I haven't sat down and watched this fight in probably about 11 years or so, however based off memory I did not walk away feeling like this was some type of robbery.
He got the nod in the Witherspoon fight, and you have Lewis and Holyfield both beating him 7-3 anyway.
I haven't watched it in quite some time but I remember having Lewis winning when I watched it live. Mercer always seemed to come up just a bit short in his biggest fights.
Yeah, I picked out close rounds in each one and 6-4 for both those fights is absolutely fine with me. I can't find a draw though.
Lewis sqeaked by, in my eyes. Very close fight. I think I had Lewis up by one round. I'd not argue against a draw. Lewis really had to dig deep here. I'd have liked to have seen a rematch.
The one fight I'd like to have seen is a Lewis rematch, just to see if Mercer could push Lennox close again.
Close fight. I scored it a draw. I do not have an issue with the official verdict though, Lennox was busier, Ray fought in spurts
I think Lennox squeaked by with his 10th round performance. He finished like a true champion should finish a fight. The knockdown Mercer suffered against Holyfield gave Holyfield the edge. I actually felt Witherspoon beat Mercer. Spoon hurt him more times than Lennox and Evander combined, last time I watched.
I spoke to Mercer in person about this fight he obviously felt he had won. I told him I had scored it a draw; and he replied, no way man I won that fight and it was in New York City not London. I should of gotten the call. I scored it 5-5 on a side note 3 of my friends were in attendance that night and they all felt Mercer had won. Not sure if crowd enthusiasm altered their perception or rooting for the American fighter but to this day they felt Mercer won. I thought it was always the perfect fight to have a draw with neither guy really lost.
