FIGHT OF THE WEEK 1- Duran vs Barkley

Do they need to be all distance fights?

 

Yeah, cool. My idea - which you half shot down, accidentally of course - was to give you a group of fights that all have a similar theme (like what I did in FOTF) and then we do those. What I had in mind was the Harding-Andries trilogy, the two Adamek-Briggs fights or Williams-Sosa I. But I suppose the workaround would be that of all the fights I list, you pick your favourite or the one you think is the hardest to score.

 

The idea I had was to do all six at once back when I was doing FOTF, but I thought you could adapt it here to do the two Williams-Sosa fights at once, and then the Harding-Andries trilogy and so on. But if you wanna do one a week, I'm cool with that as well.

I just thought of them as a group, so listed them as a group.

 

I would suggest keeping it to one fight a week (themed as you have already described it @PhillyPhan69 - a fight from that week in the past). It should be easier to get people to do it that way. Too many fights in one go and people will lose interest or not keep up. If it's a fight in a trilogy and someone is inspired to watch the other fights off the back of it, then that's fine but I wouldn't make it a requirement. Those are my thoughts anyway.

Finally got around to scoring this one. I had it 7-4-1 for Barkley in rounds and 115-113 for Barkley in scoring. I'm not good at scoring fights, to me the first round was EVEN, IB was much busier and more effective for most of the round, but Duran landed a big punch toward the end of the round. Then I had IB winning 2,3,4,5,6,8,12, and RD winning 7,9,10,11 (2 points). A lot of rounds were close, but to me, IB was busier most of the time. Just checked my card from 3 years ago, similar, I gave RD the first round that time and IB the 7th.

A close fight and both fighters fought hard. I tried to make sure that I wasn't giving RD "style" points for being smaller, a lot of rounds could have gone either way, I wouldn't want to be a judge.

This was soooo close. So many rounds fought at such a tight level. The first time I saw it live I felt Duran took the decision in a close fight, but today I recognize this fight as razor close, but a damn good fight.

 

I think the scores were closer this time than the last time we scored it? The first 6 rounds were competitive, but Barkley could have won them all, then Duran came on strong for the last 6, but again, Barkley was competitive and could have won any of them except the 11th. The knockdown made it really close. I'd like to know how Clancy had it scored, he was at ringside and sometimes they look different from ringside, but Bernstein mentioned to Clancy a few times that Clancy had Barkley well ahead. It would be interesting to see how he scored it after Duran turned things around.

 

Maybe if I get the time Philly, but I've seen this fight so many times, since (like many other posters) it's one of my favs. I'm focusing on fighters I've neglected at the moment.
