They weren’t anything remotely special. P4P is mythical nonsense. And Chris Eubank was literally the last person you’d describe as mediocre! Jheez. He was the most flamboyant guy in sport. Chris Eubank!
Both times vs Johnson? The first time he fought Jackson it was a stoppage, you must be referring to the rematch there.
Castro would have been a career best win for eubank and jones fought him before even challenging for a title . wtf being flamboyant has to do with mediocrity? eubank was a second rate fighter and the last person with authority to criticize other fighters, stop trolling.
A great champion , his comeback against jackson is legendary , the man was teak tough. altough when he beat duran, manos de piedra was completely shot and out of shape.
He went on move up to LHW and capture the IBF Title stopping undefeated William Guthrie then retaining it twice before losing to Jones.
Don’t be daft. Castro was no Nigel Benn. And certainly no Michael Watson of their second fight, who I feel put in the best performance of any super-middle in history; completely dismantling a peak Eubank trumps Toney v shot Barkley, Jones v dead Toney or Calzaghe v limited Lacy. I’d put Watson’s masterclass against Benn above Toney-Barkley and Calzaghe-Lacy too.
Locomotora was no spring chicken himself by then, who had a cool 100 wins already under his belt by the tender age of 29 and a half.
The two great North/South American based middles of the 90s were Mike McCallum and James Toney. The rest were fluff compared to those two throwbacks.
You said you thought he lost quite clearly to Johnson and Jackson. Are you refering to both times he fought Johnson? And Jackson I'm guessing you mean the rematch as the first time he stopped him. Jackson was at the end of his career by the time he rematched Castro, was coming off being stopped by Hopkins and lost a decision prior to that. So I'm kind of surprised you would remember that fight enough to argue you thought Jackson won it. It was a UD, though it was in Argentina, and I've found somebody else arguing Castro recieved a hometown decision there.
Eubank possessed Brit-Iron mandible and was a Brit-Level Warrior with a capital B, L and W. I'm a fan of Jorge Castro because I consider iron mandibles the height of manliness but Benn, Watson, Rocchigiani, and Wharton would all have beaten him and the first three are all better wins than a win over Castro would've been. Wharton is too if you know your boxing. Eubank beat Juan Carlos Gimenez who beat Castro. Coincidentally, Gimenez was, like Eubank and Castro and most British fighters, packing serious granite in his mandible section.
