I was also woken by my Dad telling me of the result in Zaire - "Ali won. He knocked Foreman out in the eighth round" Precious memories.

at 3 year old i probably slept in my crib.

don't remember when i first heard about the fight/the result.
it might have been a few years later around 1977, when i first browsed through muhammad's autobiography "der größte - meine geschichte", the paperback had a fight list up to the 3rd frazier fight in it.

i probably first watched it around 1980, when i got the super 8 version (around 7 min), excerpts only, silent and in black/white as a present for my birthday or christmas. this was a sensation for me, since here in germany it was very hard to get information/footage about my hero ali. his fights were shown live on free tv, only rarely i would catch a short interview on a sports broadcast by hazard, but that was it. remember, these were the days before video had taken over.

i still remember how surprised and shocked i was, when i was witnessing that 11th round on the screen and ali looked like he was totally out of it and ready to go down.

I was 11 in 1971, and my first major boxing interest was Chuvalo, I don't think it was Ali, more likely Quarry a couple of years before... though I knew of Ali, my real interest in Boxing, didn't begin untill about 1974/75 at 14 or 15 years old...

funny how life works, one of my childhood friends then was Nicky Furlano, at that time he didn't even know he would become a Noted Fighter, what I can say is, even as 10 year old kids, Nicky was Bull Strong, it amazes me how some people just have that built in core strength, I was agile and fast, athletic and clever, but I have never been naturally strong.

anyway, I was a kid in Toronto and I knew of Ali probably through Chuvalo's title aspirations.

I was doing the round by round on this site, it was mental and when Ali went down the site crashed and only came back up 30 or so years later.

A £50 deposit paid on 7.3.71 secured a £25 ticket and a 4 night stay at the Penn Garden Hotel. A smallpox vaccine had to be shown at J.F.K.
At Dempsey’s restaurant, I met Terry Downes, Tony Galento and Jack Sharkey
Impossible to get into the weigh - in, but I hung about in the biting cold outside MSG, keeping warm walking about. Glad I did as Joe Louis, on his own, stopped and signed his autograph, as did Jose Torres.
Burt Lancaster strode past as I walked into the Garden enroute to a seat in an upper tier. Watching Inoue and Taylor at the Hydro 18 months, or so, ago reminded me of it.

Part 2, pressed post republicans by accident!
Anyway we all know how good a fight it was.
After the decision, I made my way to the crammed ringside, passed Archie Moore and just soaked in the moment.
On the 10th, I caught a bus up to New Paltz, renewing my acquaintance and spending most of the day with Floyd Patterson, who didn’t attend the Fight of the Century.
