I’m a 34 year old male in good physical shape and conditioning. I recently started boxing with a seasoned boxing trainer and former fighter. I have no previous boxing experience. I’ve had about 3 sessions with him and I’ve hit the bag on my own some in between session over the course of about 2 weeks. I worked out with him last Saturday, then hit the bag on my own Sunday and Monday and then worked out with him again this last Tuesday. Yesterday, (4 days after my last workout) Saturday I tried to work out with him again but sort of had to take it easy because my jab shoulder is hurting to throw a jab or hook with that arm. My trainer was putting 2lb weights on my arms for a short portion of the workout and I think that may have contributed to it. It seems like a mixture between mayve somewhat sore muscles and some irritation within my shoulder. Any tips?? Has anyone else experienced this while being new to the sport?

Don't put 2lb weights on your fekin arms if you're a noob

& don't hit the heavybag at full force with the jab either or really any punch.

Do you go to a real boxing gym? Why is this seasoned trainer ex boxer doing this kind of work with you?

Conditioning mainly cardio, technique and lots of repetitions is what you should be doing

Depends. People who are made of the right stuff can start heavy drills immediately. Anyway, if you don't feel good after a serious training session (whatever sport), then working out isn't for you.

Overuse and possibly a correction of form needed.

@miniq is right that you shouldn't be jumping into anything weighted before you get your form down, but I'd caution against throwing with only partial force at the bag. With proper form you do want to be punching all the way 'through' it (and ideally push the bag away slightly, or at least dimple where you hit, with no pain, as the bag is designed to have some give), as holding back some might cause you to absorb more of the recoil and hurt your shoulder even more.

Or get in better overall shape to start out with, maybe take some of those 'boxing fitness' group classes first to dip your toes in the water, and then circle back once your core strength, cardio et al get built up a bit. Laypeople who aren't even remotely gymrats already usually can't just dive right into boxing training very comfortably. Many quit day one simply because they weren't ready when they walked in the door. (granted sometimes mentally, which bodes poorly, but often just physically)

Yes I’m going to a real boxing gym and this guy says he’s a seasoned coach. I looked him up and he’s all over the internet regarding his fighting career. My last session with him which was last Tuesday he had me hitting as hard as I could with weights on my arms and it hurt after the workout. I’m fine but it’s a little tender in my left shoulder to raise it way above my head or like scratch the back of my head. I hope it’s just sore and will get better after a week or so rest

    Just some tips.
If your shadow boxing with weights, relax and take it easy. Don’t punch with weights the way you would punch the heavy bag. Just look at videos of Floyd mayweather shadow boxing with weights. He’s doing it very relaxed, and not throwing power shots. If you are feeling this pain, I would recommend to not workout until you can either get rid of the pain, or get looked at by a doctor. Have you had any injuries in that shoulder before?

That’s the reason there. Weighted shadow boxing is not meant for punching as hard as you can with. That will definitely cause your shoulder to ache and eventually injury. They are more for shoulder conditioning than that. If your practicing power shots as hard as you can, ditch the weights and do it without. Also, the heavy bag as well.

If he has you doing that I would definitely ditch him and find a new trainer. How are you going to keep training when your trainer has you doing something that will ruin your shoulders? Or at least try to speak to him and tell him that you want to go nice and slow with weights. Here is a good video here on how it should be done. You can also look as ggg for a reference if you want.

I’ll check out that gym. Is there a specific trainer you would recommend?

I can't recommend anyone I don't live out of NY but don't feel obliged to stick to one place, don't throw them under the bus right away either. Just make sure you don't injure yourself.
