50 years after Henry Cooper s last fight ended in Joe Bugner getting a disputed points win. At the end of the 15 th, Enery, thinking he'd done enough, walked over to the ref, Harry Gibbs, expecting him to raise his arm. Not to be, Joe Bugner took all of Coopers titles. Not a well received decision at all. Anyone who's ever seen the fight, who actually believes it should have being Henry Cooper winning that night?
I've seen the fight. From what I remember, I thought Cooper deserved the decision but it wasn't really a robbery. It was a close fight, scoring it for Bugner was not outrageous.
I score it for Henry too, I've watched it about 3 times over the years and never waver in that. But, as you say not a massive upset. The press loved Cooper, Joe never really stood a chance. Cooper was done by then and least he finished that way. Not sure if Cooper ever excepted the decision and of course he had that grudge against Gibb for years.
a very close fight that could have gone either way. Have watched it a couple of times , once i scored for Cooper, once for Bugner
And Bugner pretty much became the panto villain for the rest of his pugillistic career. The British public never seemed to forgive him...
Interesting I have not seen this one. It is on YouTube for anyone else who has not. This content is protected Eye on the ring (not an expert panel by any stretch!) has 83% who disagree with this decision. I am going to have to watch this one soon.
