I think it’s probably that Bob Foster who was one of the deadliest p4p punchers ever couldn’t even check Frazier’s forward momentum in a fight and he was bigger and a much harder puncher than Monzon could dream of being p4p, h2h or whatever letternumberletter metric you care to use. It just stretches the realms of credibility that a skinny 160lber could KO or even drop a tank like Frazier. The fact it was a story that first appeared anywhere only in this century without being corroborated by Joe adds further doubt to it.
I am an avid admirer of Carlos Monzon, but Smoking Joe Frazier? I did know that sparring partners did not like to spar with Carlos, they claimed that he hit too hard. I remember Joe Frazier stating that he saw Roberto Duran fight in 1972, and that Duran had eyes like mass murderer Charles Manson.
See I know your lieing because I actually have the only copy of that. I baught It from Joe frazier him self, you can even ask him
Yes, Carlos Monzon had 100 pro fights and 99 of them took place outside the U.S. Yet, for some reason, Monzon flew to Philadelphia to spar with Joe Frazier of all people and he knocked Joe Frazier out in Joe Frazier's own gym, and then Carlos flew home, and nobody heard about it but Vito Antuofermo. (LOL) Sounds very plausible. Maybe someone told Vito that Carlos Monzon knocked out Fraser Scott, and Vito got confused. Or he's just lying. Either way, funny story. (LOL)
And then there's this: http://www.boxingmonthly.com/storie...he-day-two-muggers-tried-to-rob-jack-dempsey/
Sounds very possible, I know that Carlos fought once here in 1975 against Tony Licata in Madison Square Garden, but refused to return because of the ridiculous taxes that he had to pay. I suppose that venues like Monte Carlo, Monaco, Paris, France, Rome, Italy, and Buenos Aires, Argentina do not tax very high, plus the fact that Monzon spoke no English, nor did he want to learn.
So let's get this straight, Monzon who wasn't a devastating puncher at Middleweight , Ko's Joe Frazier whom it took a puncher on the level of Big George Foreman to ko cleanly? Very little is impossible in this world, but if theirs is something, that's it. I don't know What Antefermo THOUGHT he heard, but it's awfully strange that after all these years, he's the only person I've heard say ANYTHING like that. I've heard tons of sparring stories over the years. But never that one. Plus as another poster noted most of Monzon's fights happened in other countries, but he comes to America to spar J.Frazier?
Carlos Monzon had 61 KO's, but at middleweight, Smoking Joe Frazier was a full fledged heavyweight, kind of hard to believe.
This ugly, ridiculous thread rears it's head periodically....unfortunately....and while I won't dignify it with any therories or explanations, This content is protected , that's all.
Correction...don't know how you define "devastating puncher" but before the curse of arthritis hit Monzon's hands, he had one hell of a right hand, as Nino Benvenuti, Tony Mundine and Tom Bogs would attest to. Monzon had to modify his style, play down the right, and become more of an attrition puncher for the rest of his career..depending more and on his brilliant ring IQ to engineer the victories of his career.
