Who are some fighters that you overrated at one point in time? I once had Floyd Mayweather Jr in not just my top 10 of all time, but my top 5 lol
Some idiots have even said Mayweather would have beating Hagler at 160 because a welter like Ray did!
I've definitely overrated Aaron Pryor. I once thought he was unbeatable at 140, which I know look back and laugh at. Although to be fair, I'm probably a little guilty of underrating him in the past as well. I have a more grounded view of him now, I'd say.
Junior Witter - (still) a bit of a favourite of mine. A slick, swift, barely fathomable bag of techniques and tricks in my mind - a hittable, inconsistent fighter with crippling stamina issues in reality.
I probably got a little carried away up until 2013 in rating Donaire. Don't get me wrong - he's still my guy, one of my favourite fighters ever. But I was probably singing his all-time great credentials a shade too early, and hadn't anticipated his sudden decline in form and fortunes in 2013-14. I used to rate Eusebio Pedroza way too highly as well, possibly because of the McGuigan association and because without any context, his record on paper looks mightier than it does once you've done some scratching of the surface and watched him in action. When I started getting a bit older and wiser he dropped like a stone down my Featherweight list. Maybe the likes of Jofre, Tunney, Jeffries, Chavez Sr, Locche, Virgil Hill etc. as well at various times. Mind you, it's all relative - these guys were all still tremendous fighters, deserving of great status (well, more or less) and have achievements to be admired. Just maybe not quite as great as I once thought.
If Pryor was able to fight better competition then I'd rate him more. There's tons of fighters who had the abilities but not the resume to answer our questions.
IMO when looking at who he beat and when he beat them I can't rank him above some of the guys who I used to rate below him. I'm not one of those boxing fans who thinks that he was a duck, and that he sucks and would've lost to all the greats that he fought had they been in their prime, and that he wouldn't have been a contender in any other era, and that he's ruining his legacy by fighting kick boxers and youtubers. I think he's certainly the best fighter since 2000, but I mainly base my rankings on resume, and when looking at his resume I just don't think as highly of it now as I used to.
