Could Ike Quartey have schooled Trinidad with his jab and set him up for a brutal KO?

Quartey had a very forceful jab because he had the habit of shifting his weight onto his left foot when he threw it.
If you recall the Trinidad v Vargas fight, very early in the fight Trinidad slipped a jab and threw a left hook that dropped Vargas.
In a fight with Quartey, it might take him a round or two to set up the same move. But, when he did, it would catch Ike with all his weight on one foot and would, very likely, go a long way to deciding the outcome of the fight.

 

Trinidad was pretty quick, tall and rangy. He had power in both hands and a nice punching technique. Ike would have success probably with his jab and strength. Tito had too much overall talent and at Welterweight his power was top shelf.

 

Tito would certainly be the favorite but I would not be surprised one bit if Ike could beat him. Ike's jab had a way of neutralizing guys especially when he was at 147. Years later, Ike's very good friend that trained with him in Florida (Winky Wright) employed a similar style to dominate Tito in a middleweight fight. Tito had no answer for that jab that Wright pumped everytime he set his feet to punch and that high guard that both Wright and Quartey used. Again, that was an old version of Tito and not the beast at 147.

Ike is a very live under especially given how successful Oscar was with the jab in their showdown at 147. Tito was at his best when he could set his feet and rip that hook. Ike like Oscar didn't allow folks to do that to them with their jabs. Too answer the OP's question, Ike absolutely could win and it would not surprise me if he would have but I still would favor the 147 version of Tito. He was a wrecking machine that at that weight.

 

That was well put. Im an avid boxing fan 25yrs but i cant see what u r seeing. Idk punch mechanics and certain intricacies. I understand the pocket and fighting on the outside with the jab but u broke that down so well. Respect

 

I was a massive fan of tito in the late 90s early 2000s i would never have thought in any shape or form ike quartey could do what u r saying to tito but makes so much sense now. Still tito 147 undefeated and if it was just stacking the gloves tito the goat if there was something else in the gloves i lose a little respect for one of my favorite boxers but idk that power was sonethin else

 

I agree Ike would be a threat. It would probably be a great fight. You had to be a very good defensive fighter to beat Trinidad. Quartey wasn't as defensively sound as Winky Wright or the great Hopkins. Quartey's jab would definitely be a problem though.

He would school him with his jab. But Tito would catch him and score the the brutal KO. I like Ike but Tito would overwhelm him and stop him in a seesaw fight FOTY candidate.
