I would like you to show me ONE fight where Wilder puts on a better display of sweet science then Carnera-Sharkey.
Tua is a 5'10 stocky bodied slugger with a 70'' reach. It would be strange if he covered ring distance faster than a 6'5 super heavyweight. Tua is primarily a slugger/inside fighter who gets leverage from closer range with his short but powerful arms. Ike was a muscle bound puncher who wasn't afraid to roll up his sleeves. It was only natural that they met ring center to trade punches in an inside fight. This isn't a very good example to criticize to make Carnera look good. A tall guy with long powerful legs like Carnera SHOULD be able to cover lots of distance. That doesn't remotely indicate he had high ring IQ, it just means he knew how to actually use his long legs...which shouldn't be difficult for a giant like him to do in the first place.
Seemed difficult for Bowe. Carnera could roll up his sleeves and rough it up on the inside as well. He was versatile like that. Look what he did to Loughran. Absolutely crushed his toe. And he’d crush Tua’s toe as well.
Bowe wasn't a mover, he was an inside fighter. He didn't need to take huge strides across the ring. Look how he trapped and cornered movers like Biggs abd Hide. Once He got lazy and started gaining weight his foot speed plummeted. Anyway, if you want to resurrect the primo vs Bowe debate and get it to 300 pages by all means go for it but i am not interested. The last thing I'll say is there is nothing amazing about a gigantic 6'5 behemoth being able to take huge strides across the ring to track down a bunch of guys who were like 5'10-6'1 with much shorter arms. It would be strange if he couldn't.
The only thing strange is that he had to resort to boxing them. Despite his size, and strength he was not a hard puncher by any definition of the word.
Probably because no matter how many times trainers will tell you otherwise, people think having huge slow twitch muscles will translate to punching power. The easiest opponents I've ever fought or sparred with were the muscle heads. They are often stiff, slow, and tire out quickly. Explosive power requires a fluid kinetic chain and the ability to transfer weight quickly. Carnera was literally a circus freak strong man who lifted heavy weights and put on lots of heavy muscle. He could bully his smaller opponents with his reach and raw strength, but the flip side to this is that since they were so much lighter and faster he had a hard time actually putting all his weight into a shot and landing flush on elusive cagey opponents. He would have fit in much better in the late 90's/early 00's when just about everyone was either a bulky slugger or an obese plotter with no head movement, reduced rounds, and lots of clinching and mauling.
Carnera had more ring experience than pretty much all the lineal heavyweight champions. He fought more name fighters than Bowe. He fought avoided boogeyman fighters of his era. He fought three lineal HW world champions. He fought fighters of every size and style. If we're reducing him to a circus strong man, then AJ is just a drug dealer, Wilder is a failed high school athlete, Ali was just a painters son, Dempsey was just a hobo, Frazier was just an alcoholic, and Tyson was just a pigeon flyer.
And yet he still got outboxed or knocked out by men anywhere from 40-80 lbs lighter. This would be like Jon Jones getting his ass kicked by Mighty Mouse or Anthony Joshua dropping a decision to Canelo.
And yet he still became the lineal HW champion, and defended the title twice. But lets put him in the circus box.
He put himself in the circus box when he literally joined the circus. Didn't help that he had that awkward stiff fighting style. He made Frank Bruno look like Whitaker. He became champion by being a weight bully in an era of light heavyweights in an era sorely lacking in sweet science to begin with.
Bro if this was Jose Santo vs. Ray Impelletiere, they’d get boo’d off the the forum. No if ands or buts. This content is protected This is the era of the “sweet science,” while Carnera was awkward and stiff? Y’all can’t be insulting our intelligence like that.
Sure, let's use literally the worst version of Lennox washed up, fat, at 38, and taking a match against a last minute opponent to try and criticize modern boxing. Which is funny because he won that fight. What was Carnera doing at 38? Losing 3 fights in a row to the 184 pound Luigi Musina? Vitali is at least a hall of famer and a h2h threat to nearly anyone. No idea what this obsession is with Carnera, but like I said I am not interested in this idiotic debate. We're not even on topic. I think even old school trainers like Futch or Cus would laugh at the idea of Carnera beating someone like Wilder if they saw footage him.
