You always hear fighters getting a lot of flack for supposed ducking.

But how much say does a fighter actually have in terms of opposition? Are there things going on behind the scenes that us fans are totally unaware of? For example a manager/promoter refusing to make a fight against a fighter's wishes? Not willing to risk a loss or for marketing reasons?

    Your thoughts

get a belt, pad your record, and make a lot of money because casuals only see 'world champion' and 30-0.
it's the bane of boxing because boxing doesn't have one federation, so promoters and boxers can do as they like.

There are a lot of variables. Boxer's manager and promoter + his team ( gym, trainer, team ). Event's promoter.
Your team, manager, promoter. High level and medium level fights also by mass media. Big fights undercards the same.

A lot of things and since beginning of your pro career, since first day.
Small shows and medium size shows sometimes also just needs some extra pairs to fill cards. Still there are a lot of variables, your this supposed opponent and his team, manager, there if he does have also promoter.

    Absolute nonsense.
Casuals are the money and they know **** all about records. They only care about the name.
Manny took several losses and only grew in popularity as he beat big name opponents.
De La Hoya lost on big fight after another, only to make even bigger fights.

This is where promoters shoot themselves in the foot, thinking that shiny 0 means everything.

it does mean everything for fighters/promoters who aren't looking to dip their toes in at the spiky end.
ze germans and frank warren fighters have bneen notorious for this over the years.

Well, Oscar was Olympic gold medalist and before his first loss he had 31-0-0 pro boxing record and was 10-0 in title fights.
This too does matters and a lot. If he wasn't Olympic medalist and had lost some fight from his first fights, then he might had another career.
Young prime Oscar was fresh and managed to get 10-0 record in title fights and 31-0-0 pro boxing record until first loss.

It does, unless you are someone like a Pacquiao or DLH. Or Canelo. The guys are world wide superstars. And the exceptions.

Casuals do care about the names, but by and large the names are built up on the 0 as they come up. Especially in the early going. The longer the 0 stays in place the easier it is for the promoters, and therefore the fans, to call them “great”.

The 0 is a tremendous marketing tool as it brings with it the connotation of a great fighter, whether they are or not.

Ducking is generally just a boxing fan narrative. The simple fact is most of these guys would fight anyone at anytime. High level fighters have an insane and sometimes unrealistic sense of self-belief. They don't pay their managers 20-25% of their earnings for fun. They pay them to manage their careers and to try and maximize earnings. Managers and trainers don't benefit from taking dangerous fights too early in a fighters career, they're simply trying to find the best path to a big payday and what is best for the fighters career. It's frustrating for fans but that is the game of boxing

You don't want to get your fighter Erickson Lubin'd at 22. He went from straight from Jorge Cota to Charlo, got iced in 1 and went from fighting in the Showtime co-main to fighting Silverio Ortiz on the un-televised portion of a Fox card. In one punch, the hype was gone and so was his confidence. That is brutal business of boxing. Love it or hate it, the slow burn is the boxing path to super stardom 99% of the time.

One of my best friends has been a head trainer and gym owner for over 20 years and I get the fortunate pleasure of not only working at his gym but also going to the majority of our fights. I'll even double as a cutman on occasion so he doesn’t have to and so young and mid-level fighters don't have to pay for one because they are splitting up their already small purse 5 different ways. I've traveled all over the world for fights and the business side of the fight game is very real, very messy and very political. But also very cool. It's a sport in a world of its own.

This structure strikes at the very heart, integrity and credibility of the sport. How can you have 4 champs in the same division? It's laughable. The only sport that doesn't have a championship that determines who the best is. Pure nonsense. The only problem is, I love the damn sport. God help me!!! LOL

    Again. That ain´t true.
Andrew Cancio always fought at Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio. Why is that? Because he put butts into seats.
The biggest draws themselves have always had losses.

Donaire and Loma lost a fight early into their pro careers. Both had no problem drawing strong ratings.
Mike Tyson wasn´t undefeated when he had his biggest fights.

I am telling you, casuals know **** all about resumes, especially that 0. Just like no one knows what tournaments Tiger Woods won. We just know he is a winner in golf and was one of the best.

I am telling you, promoters are shooting themselves in the foot with that logic.
But in that regard, yes, the 0 is of grave significance to managers and fighters.

There is a big difference of course.
Undefeated prospect is easier to " sell " for media, starting from local till world level media. The same with sponsors again from local till world level. Guy might sell tickets better and become more popular if he looks good and is undefeated. This helps to build fanbase, better sales with this boxer on fight card.

Well established fighters, especially with amateur superstar background like DLH: Oly champ and 10-0 in title fights;), 31-0-0 pro boxing record will not loss fanbase cos 32 th fight had been lost.
If this will be some not well known guy like 10-0-0 and then now is 10-1-0 this might impact earning potential with him.

And then he lost again and again, yet kept selling more and more PPVs.
The opposition is what matter the most.

Floyd was a mega star, still is. But even he struggled to sell vs mediocre opposition.
Canelo was doing around 300k every fight. Golovkin could not do even 200k vs Jacobs. Together they had a blockbuster. Opposition is what matters.
Before HBO went down the drain, one of their biggest cards in term of viewership was Rosado vs Lemieux. It was an action packed card that got peoples attention.
Same with SHO stacking triple and quadrupleheaders back in 2012.

Loma was amateur superstar and his prom was bob.
He lost first title fight but get next after this because his opponent had lost belt on scales. Therefore belt in this fight might had get only Loma if he had won this.
Loma did not had won and his opponent did not had made successful title defense. Scales.

Opponent's name of course does matters a lot. The big problem is to get this highly money rewarding opponent.
Most successful pro debut had made Conor, despite he lost vs Floyd, he settled world record for DEBUT fight purse in pro boxing.
