Interesting vid on what makes the UFC so captivating in the highlighted title: Why the UFC is So Captivating
The main reason why MMA and especially why UFC is so popular is because its an admixture of it being a fairly new sport, and being well marketed. All the points he addressed as to why UFC is so captivating can be found it boxing, but this guy is full of dung and makes up some lame excuses why boxing sucks. Overall a stupid video.
I think what makes MMA, and combat spots in general, so compelling is that it combines the most primal side of our nature with the intellectual and creative. It's about problem solving. How do you defeat this particular style or opponent using your art against his? Every technique, art, style and fighter has advantages but also tendencies and liabilities. Every technique has a counter. There's no one right answer in how to build a great fighter and many different formulas can get you to the top. But at its core, even though we see this as an unfortunate byproduct of the sports we love, it's still about primal violence. It's one of the last things in this modern, technological society that has that element of primitiveness to that one some level I think we all crave. That isn't to say that we're all savages who want to hurt other people, but there's something about that side of our nature that is instilled in our instincts for a reason to help us survive. It's also a test of character in a way that we all relate to and admire. That isn't to say that every great fighter, or even tough fighter, is a good person; far from it. But you can't really hide who you are in there. Whatever weaknesses you have are going to be found out and exploited, mental, physical, emotional, creative or otherwise. It's ultimately about the triumph of the human spirit against dangerous and difficult obstacles from another human spirit. I think that's why we love it. When you really think about it, from a purely objective standpoint, combat sports are very dumb. Two guys giving each other brain damage and possibly permanent injuries for money at best and for nothing at worst. But we all know that this is a dangerous world where people will try to hurt you for no reason other than their selfish or sadistic desires, and that's why we seek ways to defend ourselves against other people. Over time, that can become an addiction to appreciation of everything noble and pure about these sports and arts themselves, that tell something important about the human experience. At least that's what I think about it.
It's just not as corrupt as boxing, after a big fight goes to a decision I'm confident the judges will get it right in the UFC
Captivating? This **** is boring beyond imagination. I'd rather watch paint dry than see a couple of guys rolling around on the ground!
Um, MMA often uses boxing judges. So there are a lot of bad decisions. Luckily they only have 3 or 5 rounds.
MMA is not captivating it is entertaining, but only entertaining in the way two hobos fighting in alley is. If you want captivating watch boxing.
MMA is captivating for a fan of fighting sports because it is the closest to a real fight without weapons involved and generally you get the best fighting the best in the ufc where it takes years and years of negotiations to get the best fight the best in boxing. The ufc is still bad in many ways just like boxing with favoritism in who gets title shots, BS rematches that no one wants to see, awful judges decisions, some fighters getting title shots off losses which is absolutely ridiculous. To me it seems that the ufc has been slowly going down the boxing route for many years in this regard and even their ppv's are now watered down to the point that 2 or 3 of the fights on the ppv are nothing but prelim standard. I don't pay for ppv's myself as I'm no mug
I know and it doesn't matter, UFC is not as corrupt and the same judges are probably taking brown envelopes in boxing
Damn right it's a joke. And so are its deluded fans who find it entertaining, apparently, to watch a couple of guys roll around on the ground. BO-ring. Give me a REAL sport like boxing, any day.
The reason it's better than boxing is the matchmaking is a whole different level of competitive. High risk fights occur time in, time out.
I’ve tried getting into it but the whole thing just looks like a sloppy street fight. If you have a combat sport where the best fight the best it’s gonna be successful.
