The 1960s were an extremely dangerous time for blacks in America and Ali was trying to stop perpetuation of the status quo of exchanging blood sweat and tears as currency for the masses while they were being murdered in massive numbers of if they were lucky enough avoided violence but just denied basic human rights. I think he did drop his hardcore black Muslim beliefs but he does always get a free pass before that, just because he was a great boxer and celebrity.
