Hey all, been out the gym for a year since COVID and looking for a critique on my bag work. I drop my right hand when throwing my left and feel like I have to have more urgency with my foot work. This content is protected
I didn’t even read your comment before looking and the first thing I thought was ‘keep your right hand up.’ You even seem to push it out a bit when you jab. Obviously started fast and then worked in spurts. Good handspeed for sure and put combos together nicely. I’d suggest throwing more at full extension (out-fighting) and not crowding yourself all the time, moving in and out behind the jab. Feinting more and moving your head (and bending at the knees) when you aren’t throwing in spurts. You do linger a bit after throwing before moving — I’d suggest working pivots in there. Mainly I’d slow it down a bit and pace yourself since you’re just starting back. Work some rounds at more half speed so you can concentrate on hand placement and footwork and extension on punches. But not bad at all for a guy who has been away for a year.
I’m not the OP but I took him to mean he didn’t move out of range after punching quickly enough. When I was coaching, we called it ‘waiting for the receipt’ — as in ‘don’t wait for the receipt, get in and get out.’ If you punch a guy and linger in range, he’s going to punch you back. Don’t be in range for him to do that. As we taught it, you wanted to be in range or out of range, not somewhere in the middle where you end up simply trading. It’s not a smart or the best way to fight — if you want to get inside, get inside and stay close; if you’re moving out of range, make sure you’re far enough that he can’t simply tag you on the tail end of his punches.
I understand that, but I have never heard someone applying 'urgent' to it. My thought was that maybe he was referring to not involving his legs and hips in his punches.
