Well we are back for the 7th installment of Fight of the week, where we review, rescore and remember some historic fights of the past. We have looked at MW, SBW, HW (x’s 2) WW and Fly this week we take our first trip to the Featherweight division, so far we have traveled to 1989, 2008, 1971 (x’s 2) 1951 and 1986 this week we travel back to 1989 again, 32 years ago!

April 8, 1989 Jeff Fenech was making his 3rd and final defense of the WBC FW title, and would meet a tough challenger in Marcos Villasana who would be trying for the 4th time to claim a portion of the FW title after coming up short to Nelson (x’s 2) and a controversial draw to Antonio Esparragoza.

Not all fights we look at will go the full 12-15 rounds, though this one does. Nor will all fights be close on the cards, and this does fall in to that category. Even though the fight is wide on the cards it was hotly contested throughout.

So let’s travel to April 8, 1989 at the National Tennis Centre in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

I was reminded, when choosing which version of the fight to put up....of the cheerleading commentary that makes no pretense of calling the action but rather cheers everything Fenech does. At times they don’t even talk about the in ring action in lieu of planning the celebration afterwards lol. But they are an energetic announce team to say the least.

    Great fight.
The freakish thing was that neither were even breathing hard after all that. That is some kind of next level conditioning.
    Both as tough as nails.
Did Fenech have his hand troubles by this time? I can't recall, but I think he did.

I believe he broke both hands during this fight (according to boxrec), but don’t know if this was the beginning of his hand issues or if they had occurred earlier.

@JohnThomas1 did you happen to see this live? In person or on TV? If so any memories of it? TBH Fenech was just a name to me prior to the first Nelson fight...

Live on TV Philly. Obviously Fenech made huge noise here even before he won the title. It was somewhat surreal watching a home grown little known Aussie putting whippings on all these guys i'd read about in the magazines like Coffee and Richardson and later on bigger names like Callejas, Villasana and Martinez.

I'll watch this one in coming days. Fenech from memory broke both his hands on his head.

It was on free to air TV from memory wasn’t it JT?

I was only a teenager but I recall watching it live as well. Maybe it was live on Sky television as a lot of fights were. I definitely remember watching Harding-Andries 2 on Sky at the local pub with my old man around the same time.

Fenech's fights were often on free to air, before Sky bought the rights. This one was on Sky Channel.

    Jeff Fenech v Marcos Villasana

Near shutout performance from Fenech who was just relentless in there against a game and tough Villasana, but the Mexican was outgunned from the start. Amazing to think Fenech broke both hands during the course of the fight - I would never have guessed.

1 10-9 (close. Brutal warfare to start the fight)
2 10-9 (relentless intensity from Fenech)
3 10-9 (close. Villasana throwing some nice combos in there but Fenech is outworking him)
4 10-9 (Fenech starting to dominate)
5 10-8 (Fenech's round again and Villasana is deducted a point by Joe Cortez)
6 10-9 (close. A better round from Villasana who fought pretty well off the ropes but still a Fenech round)
    7 10-9
8 10-10 (first round Villasana hasn't been stuck with his back to the ropes)
    9 10-9
    10 10-10
    11 10-9
12 9-10 (close. Villasana just edged it on my card but it could have gone either way)

    Fenech 119-110 Villasana

32 years ago tonight, this fight went down. I am getting ready to chill and give it another watch. Any more takers in this one?

Yeah, that is about as good an opening round as you could hope for. Both guys moving forward and swinging with some bad intentions trying to hold the center. Fenech does more over the 2nd part of the round to give him an early lead. Even the lowblows seem to energize him on the attack. This just seems like Fenech at his absolute peak IMO
