I will give the benefit of the doubt. It is part of a pattern, of a disproportionately high number of threads, that paint Marciano in a negative light. This pattern goes back ten years by the way. You also have to ask whether the author of the thread, was only able to find sources detrimental to Marciano, or whether they found the same spread of opinion as everybody else, and quoted selectively!
Classic response. Everyone else is mad... it’s funny, nobody defending Marciano ever seem to stoop to calling the other side delusional, mad or unwell....
They will of course cherry pick quotes from old time fighters and completely ignore this. Not to toot my own horn but what I said when observing the fight lines up perfectly with what Louis said who was in the freaking ring, but what does he know...?
But threads like this only paint him “in a negative light” to the extent that the common narratives surrounding Marciano unduly romanticize and exaggerate various aspects of his career and his attributes in the ring. It’s telling that a thread like this, introducing primary, contemporary sources to contextualize one of his fights is seen as some kind of inappropriate attack on the man. It’s pretty clear that a lot of the biggest devotees of certain old-school heavyweights on here much prefer the folklore to the facts!
Except the scenario he described did happen. DOZENS of times. On THIS board and numerous others. YOU have even participated in some of these discussions. They will use Rocky vs Louis/Shkor/etc and say this is evidence Rocky would flatten men like Wladmir and Lewis while simultenously hyping up Louis as if he were still an excellent h2h force at the time he fought Rocky. So forgive people for simply responding to absurd claims. People are entitled to their opinions but if you make wild leaps in logic don't get all defensive when people point it out. Speaking for myself, I don't recall ever creating threads pitting Rocky against men 50+ lbs heavier than him because the very idea is absurd. I will give my 2 cents and then people will get up in arms about it.
IMO, the version of Joe Louis that faced Marciano was not prime Louis, but was still a decent fighter. It was a great win for Rocky, and he could only fight the Louis who existed at that time. Rocky was probably not in his prime either, but he was closer to it than Joe was. If both men could have met in the ring in their primes, the result would probably have been different.
Have you seen certain Marciano fans' (that clown Rockyjim, and Choklab) treatment of Liston, and Foreman, two men seen to be H2H nightmares of Rocky?
