I even think Kinchen has a good chance beating Canelo. Can you imagine Canelo or Baldomir giving Hagler hell? These are two grade B fighters, one of them holding a championship in a division devoid of talent
Don't know the man. I just don't think he's much better than average and is the best of a mediocre lot.
Looking back through some older posts, I noticed Minter gets plenty of positive comments. He was decent, but lost 9 times. No way does he beat Canelo. I was a big Sibson fan, but he struggled at World level. Yes, he had some great wins (Minter, Collins, Davidson, Acaries, Kaylor etc) & made plenty of British/European/Commonwealth defences. He may give Canelo some trouble, but would probably get worn down eventually. Maybe I’m bigging Canelo up, but he looks pretty good to me.
I'd say "pretty good" sums Canelo up fairly, without bigging him up. Stating he is 'the greatest Mexican boxer of all time', for example, might be considered bigging him up and excessive.
Canelo is durable and a decent fighter but that's it. No real weapons, no unusual talents. It is normal for a fan to overrate a fighter like Canelo. They badly WANT for him to turn out to be an outstanding talent but they'll just have to wait until the real thing comes around Could he beat a Tony Sibson, one of Hagler's top challengers? No. Too short on talent. too ordinary nor could he beat a Dwight Davison, a Frank Fletcher or even a James Kinchen. Most likely he would languish towards the bottom of the top ten middleweights throughout the 1980s
I I was wrong about Canelo. Even though I still don't like him, he has become much better than I was willing to give him credit for then.
They are too young to get it. Hamsho was at one time a MONSTER who had a granite chin and was very physically strong not to mention a southpaw as well. Hagler was the one that prevented Hamsho from reaching boxing heights. Vito was just a relentless fighter who never seemed tire and you basically had to beat him half the death to succeed against him. Canelo is skillful no doubt but he's never faced this type of opponent. If he meets Hamsho on the inside he's going to get MAULED and abused. Vito he might be able to out manuver but if he tires he's in trouble. Sibson he might take but Sibbo could punch. If forced to pick I think Canelo has the chin and skills needed to beat Sibson. Minter I'm not too familiar with honestly.
Kinchen was a very good fighter but at times he just seemed mentally not to be there. Great fight vs Barkley. Sleep walked against Shuler in a,fight he could have won had he been more active.
Say his brutal win over Curtis Parker who at the time could really fight. Parker even beat up a young Hearns in sparring during that time period. Also beat Scypion who was a very big middleweight and coming in was unbeaten. Also beat Willie Monroe who is better then any middle Canelo has faced minus GGG. Then he stomped on Benitez. And I think he gets no credit for the Benitez fight for some reason. He had the perfect style for Benitez - strong, relentless, swarming fighter not worried about looking pretty.
