Only Bonecrusher really put him down, flat on the ground and that was after a barrage of shots. So on a scale of one to ten, One being lousy and ten being solid, what's you're pick??
I’d say 6. Neither great or awful. I think Tyson really hurt him in the second fight though. It was a good stoppage. That was the best Tyson ever looked against a good opponent after jail imo. He looked like his old self there.
Tyson never looked his old self after Rooney left his camp, Bruno just clinched for most of that bout and was practically blind in one eye at the time.
He clinched because he couldn’t cope with Tysons speed and aggression Mark. Hindsight says Tyson was never the same but at the time people thought Tyson looked the goods again. Tyson beat Bruno easier in fight two than fight one. It was a very good performance by Tyson.
Ray Leonard said at the time that Tyson`s head movement was awful v Bruno and that he came forward in straight lines, he had a point but he also didn`t have to move his head much as Bruno was so passive and got cut early on.
People were wrong, Holy proved that, it`s just that Holy was so much better than Bruno and by far Tyson`s best comeback opponent.
After the Mercer fight many were thinking that Tyson was way too much for Lewis. Lewis actually accepted a 4million step aside fee for Tyson to face Seldon and then Holyfield (admittedly that was more a business decision than a dodge). The point being that at that time Tyson was already considered the man in the division again after a handful of fights, the Bruno display being the best of those. He was considered a force again and there were genuine fears for Holyfield’s health going into the first Tyson fight. Anyway this doesn’t have much to do with Bruno’s chin. It certainly wasn’t pure glass based on being stunned as a green prospect (and subsequently coming back and winning) as you suggested.
I've always felt like people have used the whole "Everyone Tyson beat was scared of him" To put down his opposition as I don't believe guys like Tillis, Ribalta, Ruddock, Berbick, Tubbs or Thomas were scared of him but Bruno on the other hand was terrified of Tyson, Bonecrusher Smith and Spinks too.
They really did. And then when Holyfield beat Tyson...suddenly it was like Holyfield always had been considered an all time great...when really the way Holyfield was regarded in truth was that he had lost a series with Bowe and had yet to beat Moorer. People thought he was done. Nobody was high on Evander as a heavyweight till after he beat Tyson
