He's already a greater fighter than calzaghe but like most other fighters greater than calzaghe they only made pit stops at 168 or eventually left to cement their greatness so if you dont already recognize Ward, Jones or Toney as greater supermiddels I don't see what Canelo could possibly do to get there

The same as Andre Ward did right?

Or do the likes of Peter Manfredo rank higher than Carl Froch?

If he unifies the division and has a decent reign as its champ, sure why not?

It depends what criteria you use.

In terms of ability on a H2H basis, Roy Jones, Andre Ward and James Toney are all up there alongside of Joe.

In terms of accomplishments, it’s Joe, Ward and Sven Ottke.

In terms of title defences, it’s Joe and Sven Ottke.

In terms of absolutely everything, there’s only really Joe out in front on his own.

I don’t think that you can really argue against Joe being classed as the GOAT at SMW. But IMHO, Roy Jones is the GOAT on a H2H basis, and the greatest fighter to ever fight at the weight. Nobody was better than a mid 90’s version of Roy. But like Toney, he only had 6/7 fights there across a 2 year period.

Canelo will never match Joe’s stats at the weight. Joe stayed in the division for 14 years, where he fought there 44 times.

Canelo could be classed as the GOAT at SMW, but he’d have to become the undisputed champion and fight and beat many more quality opponents beforehand. So it is possible, but I don’t know if he has the opponents available and whether or not that the fights could be made.

    In terms of ability, 100%

Has there ever been a better fighter at the weight than a 25 year old version of Roy Jones who fought James Toney?
