Which other boxers have you seen who have made such a rapid improvement like Conor Benn has?

It was only a little over three years ago that this guy was gifted a decision over journeyman Peynaud who was 30+ at the time and who has achieved nothing since the fight. He was literally 50:50 with Peynaud and looked hopeless at times. In his early fights, Benn didn’t even display that much athleticism let alone technique.

Look at him now. Technically very good in every aspect. But lightening fast and ridiculously sharp.

I cannot recall any British boxers who have improved so much so quickly in such a short space of time. Any suggestions?

At the beginning anyone here would have laughed off a suggestion that Benn could even challenge for a world title let alone win one. Even in a competitive 147 division, at 24 years old, you’d back Benn to challenge for a world title now at the very least.

I personally think it’s still too soon to have him as a world title contender, if Eddie announced tomorrow he’s challenging for a world title I don’t think it would go down too well just yet, ok he beat Vargas who is sturdy enough as an opponent for a test to see where he is now and he’s progressing nicely but Eddie/Sky are pushing for the next PPV star for when the AJ v Fury fights are pushed out and both retire afterwards which I can understand.

I’d say maybe Fowler who’s just starting to adjust from that amateur background he’s been stuck in since he turned over and maybe Okolie based on his last fight where he wasn’t falling into his shots as often as he was, I think Shane Mcguigan has been good for him.

Okolie is a good shout, forgot about him.

Although Okolie was mainly a style improvement where Shane has developed him to box at range behind his jab instead of clinching. With Benn it’s not so much a style improvement but more drastic in that every aspect of his boxing and athleticism has improved remarkably.

I can’t really think of many. But yea definitely Okolie. You have to give him credit tho cos a few fights ago it didn’t even look like he’d win a British title. I think the problem here is they get over confident and chuck him in with a Danny Garcia or someone of that level and he gets a humbling. They should give him a few more fights at this sort of level before they move him on IMO.

Would say possibly fury. Did not see him going on to have the career hes had off the back of the early performances.

Maybe even eubank junior...who looked ropey in the early days. I still dont think hes a natural at boxing
...he actually lacks talent...but his sheer dedications led him to become a half decent fighter thats improved a lot since the early days.

I think connors always had pretty decent athletism and speed. Could see that he had something to work with just needed someone to teach him how to box properly. Was always going to improve more than most because of his lack of amatuer career as well. Most amatuers would be training like pro,s from before they turn over. Dont think that was the case with benn. Who by the looks of it has already taking on a world level training schedule as in training two or three times a day when in camp. Dont think he takes much time off either.

Also think the vargas win flatters him a bit. Great performance. But think if vargas was able to deal with benns athletism better you,d have seen flaws with benn as the fight went on. A fresher stronger younger guy will be able to deal with that athletism. Benns fit but he,ll tyre if he keeps trying to fight how he does. No matter how fit you are.

Better keeping him in with the older guys for the next few fights imo. Still learning. But hes doing well. As he said himself their will be blips along the way....especially with his fighting style...but its gonna be a decent watch.

I agree, I think Okolie’s problem always been that he was too eager to throw the right hand causing him to lunge forward with every shot, but that’s experience for you knowing the difference of throwing a shot for the sake of it or actually setting it up correctly with perfect timing also which he’s now getting to grips with.

Like I say Benn is progressing nicely but just think he needs to make up for the missed amateur pedigree, I think he’s got a lot of power and he’s got that aggressive kind style it’s hard to defend against when he just swarms you I think his power will take him a long way and he still hasn’t actually filled out as a welterweight yet but I think he’ll get better with every fight and doesn’t seem to freeze when the occasion is there

Fair play to him, he’s obviously went away and worked hard.

Why call out shot fighters like Khan and Brook, he should be calling out Avaneyson for the European.

Fury from Wilder 1 to Wilder 2 - amazing what difference the change of trainer and tactics made to his performance.

Went from Tony Pullis football to Jurgen Klopp football in one camp.

Dave Allen - two years after losing to a bloke who fried chicken to make ends meet he was spectacularly, brutally and expertly knocking out the mighty Lucas Browne and putting his name in the hat for a fight with Anthony Joshua, a month or so later and people were saying that he'd beat Joshua, give him Povetkin for a warm up and to add a name to his record and boost his ranking and then get him in with Joshua.......

    David Price, thank you.

He's improved since he stopped kissing his father on the lips.

Conor has been a professional boxer for 5 years.

His improvement is pretty much consistent with any other athlete that has put in the same level of commitment and time into the sport, that has access to the same or similar facilities and promotional team.

Five years after turning pro his father had already won and lost a world title and was preparing for a fight against Dan Sherry.

The only difference is that Conor's starting point was a lot lower down then Nigel's due to Conor's limited amateur experience. It's essentially the 10,000 hour rule, Conor's improvement is simply down to the hard work he has put in and the fact he has the luxury of being able to put the time in to improve without outside distractions and / or any financial restrictions,

We will likely see the exact same thing with Campbell Hatton if he lives the life of an athlete and does not have a fundamental technical flaw like David Price. Eubank Jr would probably be a PPV fighter now had he employed a top quality trainer and team from the outset and stayed with Matchroom in 2016.
