Paul Smith is a great pundit, as is Bellew. As long as their mates aren’t fighting or they aren’t towing the Sky line. I worried Smith would have not have Williams a fair crack because of the trouble after Liam’s first fight with Liam but he was fair and you could tell he wanted him to win.
I thought it would be like that, I thought Andrade would be awkward, frustrating and pick his way to win a decision. But I didn't see Andrade troubling Williams that much with his power but he did, Williams was dropped and also rattled multiple times. Williams is a very good domestic level fighter, probably European level but he just isn't world level, no shame in that, he can still come back and win fights, wins titles, maybe get another title shot. And who knows, there are so many belts, fighters move up in weight, there could be situation where Andrade moves up and Frank Warren works his magic with the WBO and gets Williams a vacant world title shot.
Andrade yet again on the brink of a standout performance and then he misses the window and goes back to the hit and hold BS. Very frustrating. Agreed with Paul Smith -- looks like the weight cut may have had an impact on him. Think he should move up now to try to get the big fights at 168lbs. 30-0 now and no big names on his record.
All being said good performance from williams. Andrades a good fighter tbh...former olympic gold medalist. Decorated amatuer. Undefeated and pretty much avoided. Williams slightly limited but hes pretty good at what he does. Just too much of a gap in skill level between them last night. Hes never gonna be elite...but could still take a few half decent scalps. Britains got some quite skilled fighters but outside of the few too many of them only really know how to fight one way. Going forward...a lot of the time trying to tire the opponent out by getting punched in the face by them. The brits are up there for work rate and determination. But lacking slightly in the skill department. Andrade had almost every punch in the book...he threw them effortlessly at times. We,re needing to get more guys and trainers over to the gyms in america earlier. You add the skill with the determination and the hard work. Its pretty much a winning formula. America got their fair share of joke trainers but its a good mix of different trainers over there. Tbf they could probably learn a thing or two from the brits as well.
Just looked it up mate...your completely correct...he never won the olympics. Think it was the the world amatuer championships he won gold at. Silver at the pan amatuer games. Won the american nationals twice and won the golden gloves. Pretty much a decorated amatuer. Beat keith thurman. Got robbed in the quarters of the olympics apparently. Always thought he won it as well. All things considered williams put up a decent showing tbf. Andrades class for me...reckon the ship has pretty much sailed for him tho. Think hearns right about him...hes been avoided because people know how good he is without having a massive name. Probably their for the taking now tho...weight and age starting to take its toll by the looks of it.
Williams was clumsy and simply didn’t have a plan B for Andrade. He has had this crowding, rushing style for a while now and if you can’t keep him at bay or fend him off then you’ll get folded as you have seen with his run of form to this contest. However, Andrade could keep him at bay. He was slick enough to avoid most of the shots in the exchanges, strong enough to hold Liam and smother him (admittedly a little too much but it’s not Andrade’s fault the referee let him get away with it) and still had the outside skills to land the eye catching single shots. Williams has said he belongs at World Level and has basically said Canelo and Andrade are 1 and 2 which he might be right with, but in reality he is going to struggle without having a secondary plan in his arsenal. The blueprint may be out to beat Andrade (high pressure, sustained with head movement and not letting him rest and clinch) but it’s certainly there to beat Williams now. If I was him I’d look for the European title and perhaps a couple of big domestic fights, such as the third Smith fight.
If I was Williams team I would be wanting to fight the Cash v Bentley winner next. The winner of that fights profile will be up after their fight and I think Williams would be favourite and get a nice payday.
Certainly would and it definitely be a barnstormer. Problem is for them two is that the loser is pretty much done with any World Title ambition, and it’s whether they will take a risk on the fight. Would love to see it.
Eubank Jnr would be a great fight for Williams, it would be a decent payday and the fight would sell itself, Williams would also go into the fight with the majority of boxing fans wanting him to win. It's a risk for Jnr, Yildrim aside he has basically fought nobodies and stiffs for the last 4 years. The fact that he's 31 and fighting Marcus 'Lost To Tyan Booth' Morrison next after a year and a half out says a lot, he's not interested in truly dangerous fights. All that hype, all that backing, 31 years old and he's never looked like being a World Champion, even with a guy at the end of his career who boxed a round with 1 arm. playing with Roy Jones isn't going to change that.
