Look at who he beat, Norton and Fraizer tell me they were not perfect for George? Prior to that he stopped no one of huge note. then he proceeded to be befuddled by two men his own size who could fight.
The performance was pretty good. Yes, Cooney was shopworn and had been inactive, but he was still a puncher. George was cool, calm and collected. His finishing was excellent. He looked good in there.

Can't fault Foreman's performance. But Cooney was never great, and that was him at his absolute worst.

Granted he was hardly a wrecking ball against Foreman but here is the story - In front of 15,732 ringside fans at the Atlantic City Convention Center and with others watching in theaters on closed-circuit TV, Cooney was soundly beaten by Spinks. Cooney says it was the biggest regret of his life. "I was not the fighter that I really was because of my use of alcohol," said Cooney, from his home in New Jersey on Tuesday. "I was a walking dead man. I did not believe the fight was going to take place, ... it was on, it was off, so many times." Calling it a nightmare caused by alcohol abuse, Cooney said the Spinks fight came at one of the worst times in his life. "It took 2 1/2 years for it to happen and I had a tremendous drinking problem during the whole training camp," said Cooney, now 54. "Michael Spinks did not belong in the ring, he was a light heavyweight." But Cooney's fight did not end with his devastaing loss in that Atlantic City arena. Fortuantely for him, his life began to change soon thereafter with a win in a battle on a different front — alcoholism. By April 1988, less than one year after falling to Spinks, Cooney stopped drinking for good and says he has remained sober ever since. Now decades removed from what might have have been his biggest defeat, the Huntington hero remains strong.
i think Cooney is maybe most concerned with an alibi for losing to the "light heavyweight". Rationalizing it in his own mind. I'm sure he felt better - healthier - against Foreman, and the drinking before the Spinks fight is no lie, but he actually looked kind of old and drained and weak and flat in the muscles against Foreman to me, and an extra 3 years out of boxing can't have made him any better, whether he quit the booze or not. By my estimation anyway.
Had to rewatch it...Cooney looked ok I guess. For being out of the ring that long. He won the first round imo. Cooney is one of those guys that I’m not sure if guys underrate or overrate...had some good wins and some bad looses. A decent contender overall.
Possibly with the first point it's hard to say. To be honest i don't think any version of Cooney beats even Old Foreman. Old Foreman wasn't the toothless fossil Lyle and Norton were.
Frazier cleaned out the heavyweight division while Ali was in exile. Foreman probably gets slightly overrated as most punchers do. He had some flaws but his strength and power were not overrated. He was devastating.
