Good list, I would just switch the Klitschko's for the same reason as Marciano. H2H I personally think Vitali would have beat Wlad, but accomplishments I have Wlad way ahead.
Holyfield is my very solid #3 all time. He has been my #3 for some time. Others are subject to change, and I appreciate all the input to help me out. My defense of Holyfield at #3 is: his wins over Douglas, Foreman, Holmes, Bowe, Moorer, Tyson(twice), Rahman, and his draw with Lewis (all World Lineal Heavyweight Champions). In addition he has 4 losses against fighters who were Lineal Champions- Moorer, Bowe (twice), and Lewis, and all were hard fought. That's 8-4-1 against Lineal Champions in 13 fights. And he won the World Heavyweight Lineal Title twice, himself. That's quite a resume for any Heavyweight, in my book. And there is very little to pick apart about his fighting ability, heart, and stamina. He is a very safe #3 on my list. I can't imagine who tops him, other than Ali and Louis. I definitely should look again at the Klitschkos, since when I originally made my list, they were still active, and I haven't really re-evaluated them since. They'll probably push Shavers and Baer off the list. And I agree that Moore is shaky. It is still a work in progress. All input is greatly appreciated.
You're missing the two most overated heavyweights on our beloved forum. Wladimir Klitschko and David Tua. My man Lennox Lewis made top 5 so I'm happy. Also I'm one of the very few that rate Vitali over Wladimir. So where is Vitali? He would obliterate all of Marciano's opponents and Marciano himself. *runs for cover*
And you don't think any of the guys below Marciano could have done the same under the same circumstances? Looking at your list again, you have a guy with one title defense over Larry Holmes, what's up with that?
Yes, but They didn't. So it doesn't matter, and yes unlike most of the guys below him, Marciano came at the right time, but it's not the rock's fault.
Liston won the undisputed heavyweight champions. Holmes never held that precious gold. Larry avoided a big amount of fighter (largely due to the "Money" thing) Whereas Liston was the most avoided fighter in history.
I'm a fan of Holyfield but he was dominated by both Bowe and Lewis. He doesnt deserve to be anywhere near the top 3.
Ranking old timers along with moderns is really tricky but to the extent that we can, Johnson is too high. First for avoiding McVea, Jeannette, and Langford at their best. And second what would we say even is his best win? Seems to be between Ketchel, Burns, and Jeffries. Two 170-lbers and a 5-years-retired ex world champion.
I'd say Johnson's 12 best wins are: Fitzsimmons, Burns, Jeffries, Langford, McVea (3 times), and Jennette (5 times).
Get in the 21st century pal.. & a lot of them are CWs & LHWs too LOL.. that's one of the reasons why these lists are pretty redundant.. and to come up with a list we would have to study each and every top tier heavyweight ever, & that can never be done as most people wouldn't have the time and footage doesn't even exist for many of their fights either… there is pretty much a core consensus of a small group of HWs that everyone sticks to and then the rest is just down to personal opinion & your experience of the sport
If I were to do a deep dive into this then Chris Byrd would be another one I would consider from recent years.. a defensive master that would throw back to any era nicely.. Fury too.. but like I say, bit of fun but there's too much weight disparity and intangibles et cetera..
