FIGHT OF THE WEEK 11- Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo I

Great stuff, Philly! Got to watch Toney-Jirov first before I move on to this classic. Great choice!

 

Very good fight that one. I enjoyed it a lot. Castillo-Corrales 1 though - that's something else!

I liked the inside fighting in this fight, particularly the inside work of Castillo. Corrales was effective too, but he might have been a little better at range. I had Castillo winning 2,3,4,6,8, and Corrales winning 5,7,9, with round 1 EVEN. My score was 87 for JLC, 85 for DC at the time of the stoppage (5-3-1 in rounds).

I didn't know the result of the fight before the end, and when Castillo dropped Corrales twice in the 10th I thought that Castillo's, (what I considered), better body work was going to pay off. The extra rest time to put the mouthpiece in twice AND the rest time taken to give Corrales a point deduction for spitting out the mouthpiece might have kept Corrales from getting stopped, but regardless, the ending was a surprise for me. Another factor that went against Castillo was the cut in the 4th. I had him up 3-0-1 after that round and I thought the fight tightened up after the cut.

A lot of action in the fight, and two good fighters. I was planning on watching a few rounds and then finishing it later, but couldn't find a lull in the action to stop watching. The 10th round would have been scored about 10-5 for Castillo with the point deduction if not for the stoppage.

EDIT: Just watched their 2nd fight, no surprise in that one! One comment under the video was that Corrales must have been really hurt because he forgot to spit out his mouth piece.

 

Fantastic fight, but the way Corrales won really leaves a bad taste. I think the ref dropped the ball.

 

I don't think he should have bothered with getting the piece back, certainly not the second time, and should have waited with the deduction until after the round finished (if the fight wasn't finished by then) as to not interrupt the action. As it was, it was clear that he acted exactly as Corrales wanted him to.

 

I try to like this fight but I just can't. I feel that Castillo got robbed of a victory.
They stopped the action TWICE for the mouthpiece.
And that was ALOT of time that he got to recover.
The second time when he took the mouthpiece out I would have stopped it if I were the ref.

 

Yes, I think that would have been a better course of action than the one the ref actually did take. Castillo has every right to fell that the ref robbed him of this one.

 

The mouthpiece thing pisses me of and its not just in this fight but in almost every fight someone loses their mouthpiece or spit her to gain time and the incompetent refs procede to stop the action due to it and take forever to resume it giving one fighter they need when its done in purpose and when its not they take forever and stop the flow if the fight that is never the same when it resumes.

The other day i was watching a fight from Japan and one of the fighters lost his mouthpiece at least three times and the ref allways did the same thing he picked up the mouthpiece gave it to the corner to clean it while he did this he never stopped the action he then picked the mouthpiece from the corner and in one or two seconds while there was a lul in the action he put the mouthpiece back in thats how it should be done by any competent ref.

One of the things i hate more about boxing are incompetent refs they have ruined so manny fights for me it pisses me of to no end.

 

A point deduction for the first infraction and a DQ for the second (which was more blatant than the first) would probably have been the fairest course of action with hindsight. It was an amazing round, regardless.

 

I think Tony Weeks was in a no-win situation. I haven't checked the rules regarding this (which may differ from region to region) but I'm pretty sure it's a rule that the ref is obligated to have the fighter retrieve his mouthpiece at the first opportunity.
Since there was a break in the action anyway because of the knockdown, I suppose this was that time, highly contentious though it was.

A DQ which may have been a fair judgement, would have caused a riot and you'd never hear the end of it.
But regardless, I agree that Diego received a massive bonus because of all the elapsed time.

The fight itself was amazing. It's incredible how much punishment each fighter received, and how much they dished out. And all at the highest level of skill, shoulder to shoulder.
Corrales was doing slightly better for my money, visibly rocking Castillo several times, but Castillo was dishing out huge punishment as well. The swollen eye of Corrales was a big factor as well and that's when Castillo really started to dish out some heavy punishment.
Both guys were eating flush power shots like they were nothing. Amazing display of bravery, guts and grit by both.
Regardless of the result, both men deserved enormous credit for this fight. Such warriors.
The stoppage was in the nick of time. Castillo was helpless and Weeks did 100℅ the right thing.
(It goes to show also how absurdly overrated the heavyweights are. Fury-Wilder 1 gets like multiple 50 page threads, and this would get about 1 ten page thread, in a much better fight)
