He chose to walk away and I was amazed by his quick downfall. - Kovelev - he was in decline but his stock plummeted after the second Ward fight. Canelo still fought the shell of Kov but his stock was near bottom at the time. - Donald Curry (as someone pointed out). I was a big fan and was shocked at his rapid decline. He was well regarded and everything went down the tubes. I think he may have been battling substance problems at the time.

Well, I think from modern amateurs none. Older era amateur boxing was different, they sometimes had high KO % and KO numbers in amateur ranks despite amateur fights were short. Some from these specimens who already had KOed a lot of ppl in 1st and 2nd amateur fights rounds had enough power and skills to KO a guy and looks that were enough fast. These kind of specimens yeah, might had pulled upset to anyone if he had bad night in the office. Dudes like Patterson, Foreman, some number with old time EE amateurs. I think Kovalev stock did not get down much after fights vs Ward. Ward was very well known and notable, he retired after fights vs Kovalev and was not active boxer anymore. Kovalev after this had won 2 fights in row and managed to get Eurasian Boxing Parliament LHW title and WBO World LHW Title belt. He was again actual and in top. For Kovalev I think most damaging for career loss was fight vs Eleider Alvarez. Not well known in europe boxer, Eleider had put very impressive beatup on Kovalev. This wasn't 1 punch KO where someone might think that this was fluke. Eleider dropped him again and again, landed on him not 1, 2 or just 3 full power proper punches. He landed a lot. Kovalev had won rematch via clear decision. This still did not improved his stock, just get him back his belt. Kovalev vs Yarde fight was good fight. Not known outside of U.K Yarde appeared upset for Kovalev. Kov won this one but he barely had survived 2 rounds in this fight. Was clear that boxer doesn't even need to be well known to put Kovalev in serious danger.

Football is the biggest sport in England, an English team winning the biggest domestic tournament against another English team will always be a huge event. I'm just gonna assume you haven't actually read these newspapers, Liverpool winning was huge news. Huge.
The Joshua loss to Ruiz was pretty bad. Yes, the hardcore fan base knew Ruiz could fight, but the vast majority of people watching just saw a short grossly obese man batter the no1 world champion. I remember thinking that this fight had no upside for Joshua. The Wilder defeat was bad for the opposite reason; people knew who Fury was... a feather fisted boxer that runs for 12 rounds. So, to see the hardest hitting, baddest man on the planet (self proclaimed) get absolutely pummelled by the runner with no power was unthinkable. And the subsequent drama that followed only cemented the embarrassment and fall from grace. On a domestic level in the UK, you’ve got Price.
