Who´d do better at HW today, Frank Bruno or Ingemar Johansson ?

Frank would get beat up by CWs today, and his own era. Ingo would hang tough with the LHWs of today.

 

Frank would do OK today. I even give him a shot at beating AJ.
Ingo?? No, not so much, be surprised if he even got a title shot.

 

Maybe not real life Ingo, but ESB Ingo would tear through the division, and annihilate everyone in his path to get the title.

Neither would do much, but Ingo would fight at CW most likely. Bruno wouldn't be anything special, roughly the same as he was in his era.

Today’s heavyweight title scene, whilst being an entertaining era, is a different division even to the one Frank fought in.

I think Frank would do very well. At least as well as he did in the 1980s.

He is better than wilder but that does not necessarily mean he can beat Wilder because Whilst Frank did very well losing to Lewis and Witherspoon he still lost those fights.

I don’t think Wilder ever beat a good fighter. His best opponent was an old guy which is kind of the same for Joshua actually but at least AJ has some form and has at least beaten guys trying to win.

Even Fury probably would not stand out in Franks era and I rate Fury better than AJ..but even this does not mean Frank Bruno can beat Fury.

Frank did not have a champions temperament. And this would let him down in a weaker era than he fought in because Bruno just was not proven against live opponents of his level. He was big brave and inspiring. But he just got knocked out whenever it really counted.

Ingo? I think Ingo was a proven fighter in a completely different weight class to what the heavyweight division is now.

Since there was no super heavyweight division in the 1950s nobody who is around now at “heavyweight” could exist as they are today in Ingos era.

And the reverse is true against Ingo. He could not exist today as he was then either.

The main crux of the matter is that for their times, Ingo was about as proven for his day as anyone can be and Frank for his day fell way short of this.

At least Frank fits into the modern weight class, but never forget he was no world beater in his own time.

So can you answer the question the OP asked? Who would do better at HEAVYWEIGHT, Ingo or Bruno? No long essays, or anything of the sort. You have 2 options. Bruno or Ingo.

In one-off fights between best versions, a case can be made for the smaller man. For sure.
It's extremely difficult to reconcile the notion that a 200 pounder can compete with the big boys over the course of a career, at least at the higher levels.

To put it this way, if 193 pound Roy Jones who beat Ruiz thought he could have made a successful career at heavyweight, he would have tried his luck more. There would be some major money fights out there for him.
But he was wise and knew his limitations.

It sounds like a shallow argument, but over the course of a career, size does matter at heavyweight.

Please answer the question. Who would do better TODAY in the HEAVYWEIGHT division? No squirming or trying to get out of it.

 

I don't think anyone rates Bruno as high as Liston, Tyson, and Foreman, and if they do their delusional. So I'm not sure how picking Ingo over Bruno equates to such a hyperbolic statement.

No, most of us are just saying, look, he was good for a couple of years, and Bruno was never much good.
