This content is protected Tiger really forced Ruben to try and box in this one, nearly every time he engaged It had crushing results for Ruben "The Breeze" Carter. Tiger as always was very clinical... till he wasn't-he was off balance at times throwing everything in each punch at Ruben whenever he got too brave including those wicked body-shots. Tiger could have made a name off of being a front runner but he was as cool as ice dicing his opponents from afar happy to win on points he just simply reminded them why they should stay on the back foot whenever they tried standing in the trenches.
Max Kellerman once said that if he had to choose between physical strength and punching power...that he would choose physical strength.... and I always think of that when I watch this fight
is it Rose Tinted Glasses, or Nostalgic to "think, believe or KNOW" ... that these men and their contemporaries previous, to a point back, and then present, to a point forward, would have No Doubt in their minds as to a match with a Canelo or a triple G? or is it just me?
Love watching Dick Tiger fight. The 60's middleweight division was so good with Tiger, Giardello, Fullmer, Archer. All of them were so unique from each other but one thing is for sure, you had better not try to out muscle Tiger. Giardello understood that full well and was always moving against him.
Another great example of Tiger's strength was his lightheavyweight title win over Jose Torres. Tiger weighted only 167 yet had the strength to push Torres back and basically bully him in the later rounds on his way to UD.
I remember the last time I watched this fight seeing a fourth KD, but the ref waived as a slip, didn't he?
Torres himself from memory was mostly a career MW? Tiger was very strong, oddly now I may be remembering wrong but didn’t Griffith outmuscle him?
No, he was mostly a light heavy. He campaigned at middleweight from the 58 to 63, when he changed to light heavy, which he stayed at for six years, at which he fought his most notable bouts.
Griffith beat a 40 year old Dick Tiger. I couldn't remember either so I looked it up. According to boxrec, it was Griffith's hand and foot speed that Tiger couldn't cope with. The only man that I am aware of that was physically superior to Tiger as far as strength was Bob Foster.
I have always thought that a Tiger/ Cerdan match up would be interesting. both strong MWs can punch, and more importantly can take a punch, both fight tight inside, short educated shots, with power and precision. keep well.
