Guys like Sam Langford, Packey McFarland, Tommy Gibbons and Joe Gans all used combos without any problems and they don't fit into your description.

Slipping is a proactive move not a reactive move...you’re rarely gonna beat the punch unless they Telegraph it. Old saying action always beats reaction. But you’re right about the counter with it. If you slip left should be throwing a left slip rihht a right. Many fighters do it but they wait for a miss.
There are some skills I see rarely used (only be the best now) today. Feinting and Parryitn is def a few (Klitchkos and Mayweather were highly skilled).

slipping is proactive yes but you combine that with the punch . If you keep slipping without throwing they are going to aim where your head keeps ending up ala the knockout of Tyson by Lennox Lewis.

No doubt. I was more thinking of 30's/40's era, but some probably utilized it then, too.

It seems less vicious, more professional. It's good fighters get less hurt of course (early stoppages).

I miss 15 rounds all the time.

But I'm old, so nothing to see here...lol

The jab, straight right hand , followed by the left hook is boxing 101. It's
the very 1st combo taught by any reputable boxing coach. As I was
taught the jab= opens the door, right hand= step in the door, left hook
=closes the door, because it leaves the fighter in a better defensive
    position.
But as one advances in the fight game , and it begin to become instinctive,
one begins to punch were the opening will be. The beginner's basic combo's
become more advanced and instead the jab becomes a double jab, left hook,
left uppercut. Or some other combo right for that particular moment.
Those are the key words " Particular moments" .
Just because one doesn't see the basic combo in past fighters doesn't mean
they wasn't taught it . It means they have grown past the basic's and
fighting instinctively, using particular combo's for particular situations.

Using the jab ,right hand, left hook , does nothing if the holes are not
their to exploit. And becoming predictable while boxing gets a fighter
    one thing. That's KTFO.
