How do you think Rocky Marciano would perform in todays era of Heavyweights

I've never thought that Marciano's size would be his biggest problem if he was competing today. His lack of skills (balance), lack of speed, clumsy footwork, etc. would limit him more than his size. At 168 or 175 it would be even more apparent, he'd look even clumsier and he'd look like he was in slow motion. I had heard great things about RM from boxing fans and even from older family members, but when I saw him on video, I stopped believing the Marciano stories.

I have nothing against Marciano, a lot of people in my family idolized him. Apparently he was boxing when the first televisions came out and I heard stories of family gathering to watch him fight. I heard all of the stories/myths about RM. I even have a book that has been passed down, Rocky Marciano, Biography of a First Son, autographed by the author, Everett Shehan. But, I have also seen video of RM, and IMO, he looks slow, clumsy, unskilled, and since I trust what I see on video more than what I hear or read, I don't think RM could compete at 168 or 175 today and certainly not at 200 or Heavy. If people want to say he was the best of his time, he probably was, but all I've got to do is watch him on video to know that his time passed in the early 1950s.

 

Extremely likely. Rocky has gained even more momentum during your 5 year or so break. He's the most relevant Heavyweight in the history of ESB.

It's a pity, because these threads devalue Rocky. We should be talking more about his life & times, finding golden snippets of information about the man, but he gets used as an avatar for what basically is a subject about size, and old-timers vs. modern guys.
Which is what these threads always boil down to in the end. It's vacuous, sorry to say.

He wouldn’t be in the heavyweight division. He’d have to cut down to Light Heavyweight or be a very small Cruiserweight.

 

His average and median opponent (and that includes an overweight outlier) was right below 190 pounds. Thats like 15-20 below Cruiser rehydrating to 207-210 at fight night.
175 or 190-CW would be perfect for him. He himself averaged 185 pounds.

 

I think Marciano was a joke that God made to toy with us.

“Hmm I’ll make a heavyweight who is 5”10, has a short reach, who fights small opponents who were all old. BUT, I’m gonna make him go 49-0! I’ll give him some undeniably good traits like stamina, power and determination. Yes, this will really mess with the minds of the ESB forum. Oh, and I’m also gonna make him white.”

IMHO, born in modern times and competing today, he would do quite well.

 

Ask yourself which of those two descriptions fit a fighter of his achievements.

This is it in a nutshell. As much as I admire Rocky and respect him, he just isn't big enough. He's a great heavyweight in a smaller heavyweights era. That's taking nothing away from him him, but time moves on. I think even Marciano himself would admit that.

 

The gauntlet has long passed the supporters now as thread after thread has been utilized to detract in recent years. He's easily the most heavily scrutinized fighter in the history of ESB and therefore the most criticized for mine.

It never seems to get old for quite a few tho so i guess it keeps the forum ticking over and passes their time

Marciano was a great heavyweight. Today’s heavyweight division is the cruiserweight division.

The HW division as we know it now is not the heavyweight division.

Today The professional super heavyweight division has the wrong name.
