Leonard held the undisputed welterweight championship after beating the great Tommy Hearns in their first fight.

Generally recognized as around the third to sixth best welterweight of all time. He was Boxing Illustrated's Fighter of the Year three times, in 1979, 1981, and 198. Leonard was also the Boxing Writers Association of America Fighter of the Year three times for 1976, 1979, and 1981. He was Ring Fighter of the Year twice in 1979 and 1981, Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 1981, his first fight with Thomas Hearns was named Ring Fight of the Year for 1981, and his fight against Marvelous Marvin Hagler was named Ring Fight of the Year and The Upset of the Year in 1987.

Ray was named Ring Fighter of the Decade for the 1980s, and the Knockout Outstanding Fighter of the Decade also for the 1980s. Boxing Illustrated named Leonard the second greatest welterweight of all-time, the Associated Press named Leonard the third greatest welterweight of the 20th century, and Ring named Leonard the fifth greatest fighter of the last 50 years.

Also a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame inductee (1985). The International Boxing Digest named Leonard the fourth greatest pound-for-pound boxer of all-time (1997), and Ring named him the ninth greatest fighter of the last 80 years. He had it all, he was lightning fast, story, could punch, and had a great ring IQ.
    Happy Birthday Champ!
