Why is Canelo still not a household name? He`s like the Mayweather/Pacquiao of the current era.

Most people where I live in the UK don`t know who Canelo is, why are boxers less known than in previous decades?

White Mexicans (Spanish: Mexicanos blancos) are Mexicans who are considered white, typically due to being of European or other Western Eurasian descent. While the Mexican government does conduct ethnic censuses in which a Mexican has the option of identifying as "White" the results obtained from these censuses are not published. What Mexico's government publishes instead is the percentage of "light-skinned Mexicans" there are in the country, with it being 47% in 2010 and 49% in 2017. Europeans began arriving in what is present day Mexico during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. While during the colonial period most European immigration was Spanish, in the 19th and 20th centuries large waves of European and European-derived populations from North and South America did immigrate to the country. According to 20th and 21st century academics, large scale intermixing between the European immigrants and the native Indigenous peoples would produce a Mestizo group which would become the overwhelming majority of Mexico's population by the time of the Mexican Revolution. However, according to church and censal registers from the colonial times, the majority of Spanish men married with Spanish women. Said registers also put in question other narratives held by contemporary academics, such as European immigrants who arrived to Mexico being almost exclusively men or that "pure Spanish" people were all part of a small powerful elite, as Spaniards were often the most numerous ethnic group in the colonial cities and there were menial workers and people in poverty who were of complete Spanish origin.

He looks white because he's a ginger, not because he's fully European -- his mother looks distinctly nonwhite. Ginger genes are extremely dominant, as exemplified by Blake Griffin, Rashida Jones (more strawberry blonde than ginger, but whatever), and those famous black/white biracial twins.

 

He doesn't speak English, doesn't bible thump, doesn't literally throw money at a camera, and isn't the most famous individual his nation has produced. Also neither Floyd nor Manny were a fraction as known as they became until they beat Oscar and shortly after danced around each others' name for years.

 

None of those British fighters were known to average sports fan in the UK.

With or without Oscar, both Pac and Floyd would have became mainstream.
