Should be shown to every young pro prospect. In the meantime, the more grounded, better looked after Colin Jones became a millionaire.
Bunce also found Frankie Lucas but never showed the film. Apparently, Lucas was homeless and very poorly.

 

If focused one has to wonder how far Kirkland really could have gone, most boxers can only dream of having such natural talent.

 

Haven’t had time to watch the video but what was his deal after the Duran fight (which was dreadfully boring ot watch as I recall)?

Didn’t fight for a year, then steps in against basically a middleweight in Fred Hutchings and gets KO’d.

 

I have found in discussions majority talk most positively about Kirklands talent, however the issue of his lack of focus and his fall into the drink and drug culture inevitably get raised too, just imagine if they had present day drug testing in boxing during Kirklands heyday,.

Kirkland beating Duran was incredible when you think that the last person to beat Duran before him was World Champ Benitez and the two conquerors of Duran after Kirkland were Hagler and Hearns, now that is a esteemed line up for Kirkland to be part of.

I cannot subscribe to view it is insulting to Laings legacy that he is not discussed as we might like, Laing himself chose to go off radar, he for much of life lived it in the dark and dingy arena of Special Brew and drugs, thankfully something most have no first hand experience of and yes somewhere that many have little sympathy or empathy toward. That can seem harsh, it is not intended to be, just my experience of the Special Brew/drug fraternity is that they are not welcoming folk when they are imbibing that concoction.

Talent, opportunities, top promoter a big name win on his record, Kirkland had it all, last i heard he now resides in some form of care facility in Yorkshire.
