That isn't quite true, Jim Watt had huge attention in Scotland when a champion and Buchanan. Burns was never good enough or Scott Harrison. Taylor is now in another category to them entirely. Time will tell.
Well I was more talking about buchanan in terms of modern times. I never lived through the seventies so I wouldn't really know much about watt or buchanans popularity at the time but I can guarantee most Scots today haven't heard of buchanan. Most Scots will of heard of Denis law, gavin Hastings, Jim baxter, Jackie Stewart, Kenny Dalglish, Stephen hendry, liz mccolgan. Burns and Harrison might not be as good as Taylor or buchanan but they were still very much unknown by Scottish sportsfans let alone the general public. In general I think Scotland seems to ignore its boxing heroes to a certain extent. I am not saying burns or Harrison should be known by the general public but Taylor and buchanan should.
They've not had much of a boxing hero since Buchanan 50 years ago, that generation all know who Buchanan is. Don't be daft including Liz McColgan btw, she never had thousands lining city streets like Buchanan had, plus a full football stadium (Easter Road) to greet his homecoming. I only read about this btw, but it's a fact.
Poor management. If you're a world boxing champion, you're supposed to be a star locally, at least, if you're american. If you're from another country, you're supposed to be a country sensation. Period. If you are an undisputed boxing champion, you're supposed to be a star doesn't matter where you live. If you're not, it's because you have the wrong people taking care of your career. Period. Terence Crawford was the 140-pound undisputed and undefeated champion of the world. He was also a 2-division world champion, Fighter of The Year and a pound-for-pound sensation. You go on Youtube and search for "Terence Crawford interview" and the best you'll find out is him talking on a niche radio show. This man should be giving interviews to Jimmy Fallon, singing Beyoncé songs with James Corden, handing out awards in some award show where he could take a lot of pictures with stars and post on social media. Instead, he's nowhere to be seen. His ppv can't attract even the hardcore boxing fans. He can't make a single big fight, because he's a tough opponent and pays too little for a fight like that. Josh Taylor is going the same pathway. Be a really good boxer, with really good results, but nobody knows his name outside of boxing fan base and, as a consequence, he doesn't make the millions that he could make by filling out stadiums and selling millions of ppv in his home country + endorsements. Boxing needs more people that can build brands out of fighters talents.
Signing with Top Rank gave Josh the Ramirez fight and now Undisputed, but not sure what else Arum is gonna do for TTT tbh. We will see!
Poor management like some mentioned. Plus some of the stuff he has said outside the ring - anti-Covid, Tommy Robinson and etc.
It's absolutely criminal how no British broadcaster picked up the fight As was the lack of promotion from Top Rank for the fight E-Hearn chimes in Timestamped This content is protected
Because he is Scottish. And "British" means English in reality. The "British" flag wavers are really mostly English and they couldn't give a flying fig about Scotland. There has always been seperatism and division between all British countries.
He is average person, don't know how to talk, don't like to entertain casuals like Fury, He is not as good as this forum trying to push. + terrible british/scotish accent is not appealing to most of the fans.
He has been promoted poorly. Also he is white and has a somewhat questionable past with racism and therefore TV shows are not going to go out of their way to book him.
