How well would Sam Langford do today?

greynosoold's next post, #298 is also excellent. Watching the feet is used by a lot of good boxers and mostly eliminates the boxer being fooled by their opponent's eyes or another type of feint. The only problem is that guys who don't move their feet right can throw off your game if you're watching the feet. If the guy doesn't shift weight he might hit you while you're watching for a weight shift, but on the positive side, the punch probably won't be hard.

I read a book by Jerry Kramer, an offensive guard for the old Green Bay Packers. He said that when he played they would sometimes "pull" him as though they were running a sweep to the other side, hoping the defensive tackle would follow him down the line to stop the sweep. Then they would run through the hole left by the DT. He said it worked well against good DTs, but the ones who weren't as good would just stay were they were and the back would run into them. That's how boxing can be if you watch the feet. You'll do well with good fighters and the guys who shift their weight, but you might get caught by someone who is not well schooled enough to use their feet right.

Anyway, greynotsoold's post #298 is well worth reading, you just have to open/expand it.

 

The best fighters throw first and drop/shift their weight behind it, right there at impact, hardly any tell whatsoever. Not much tell, not from where the opponent is standing anyway. View from ringside might show more but that won't help the opponent, nevermind how it looks on film. Looks different when you're in there. Any good fighter can shift their weight into a punch just before they throw, rotate into it and through, but the best fighters can throw what essentially starts as an 'arm punch' and then drop/shift their weight behind it on impact, makes it look effortless.

 

Henry Armstrong was exceptional, that can be seen on film.
No one quite like him. No one has been able to replicate his style to the same effect, nowhere close.

 

I find Jeanette's skillset quite underwhelming but he sure showed some heart in that fight !

I think his jab was fair, but he looks very limited in other areas. He basically tried to jab, grab and exhaust Langford - it didn't work well.

 

Yeah and for a good reason. He tasted Langford's power quite a few times, this fight was no exception.

We can all agree to disagree on many levels, but Langford's power is frightening. It's visible even on available footage that he was special in that aspect. Fighters much bigger than him did everything to survive.

 

same with Lang same with Flynn, Guys look legit afraid of Langford and all of them were knocked down or out on film(in that bill lang fight he gets knocked down multiple times but its not on film.)

 

It's sad that it took 182 posts for someone to clearly state this.
