ALi didnt have everything ,ali could not lead, did not have sound defense against jabs or hooks, could not punch to the body well, didnt have clinch skills, Johnson had everything not Ali!
Johnson threw that one punch to get into a clinch ,Ali let Ernie Terrell and lesser fighters tie him up, Johnson gets him in there and once they are fighting in the clinch thats Johnsons world .
Would have been a very technical bout until Ali breaks through after midway and starts punishing Jack. Ali faster and that's what would get him through here. Plus prime Ali was far busier.
where does ali get his openings to land his jabs , do yall ever watch films of the boxers in question and do comparisions? genuine question here?
Again, I'd take Ali clearly here but good luck trying to clown Johnson. Jack was very, very skilled fighter who developed unique style that was tough to look good against. Ali's reach and speed advantage should be enough to overcome that, but he wouldn't look spectacular doing so. Also, the idea that Ali would stop Johnson quickly is ridiculous. Johnson wasn't stopped for 15 years of fighting at the highest level.
Yeah no Ali fought at a level far above the likes of Jack Johnson. Look at Johnson on tape man he looks like a journeymam compared to Ali
That's your opinion, but you know that Ali wouldn't fight the same way in the 1910s with different rules and equipment? Johnson was very skilled, just in different way than boxers are now because it was simply different competition. Ali would definitely adapt, he's one of the best ever after all, but he would have to change some of his habits. Similary, Johnson wouldn't fight identical with bigger gloves, shorter fights and less clinching allowed. He was very talented, smart and skilled though, so he definitely wouldn't be bad. Saying that he looks like journeyman isn't fair for Jack.
Johnson didn't have everything either. He was more flat footed, he didn't have the same outside punching skills, his jab was good at countering lefts but it wasn't good at leading the offense and his defense relied heavily on physical strength. Ali was also faster and quicker than Johnson.
Hi Samtotheg. I believe that Ali's speed would enable his jabs to get through Jack's defence. Not that I'm underestimating Jack. He was unique. As was Ali. Have you read the book 'Unforgivable Blackness' ? A superb read.
Ali beats him all day every day. Not even close. Those who know my posts know I cant stand Ali but nobody except maybe Frazier beats a prime Ali
