This kid cannot punch. It's honestly pathetic and embarrassing to punch that soft at this level of the sport. He couldnt break a wet paper towel. That said, you know else had pathetic power? Chris Algieri. He was landing flush on Amir Khan of all people and could barely put a dent in him. Not many of the guys making fun of Haneys power had much to say about Chris. I recall numerous were actually fans despite having power so pathetic he brought shame to the family name. Regardless, Haney isnt build to last. He just can't punch.
I don't think it's on an Algieri or Malignaggi level but yea it's a concern when you assess his potential, bags of talent but the lack of power throws a big ? over how far he can go. Still very young though.
I think he actually hits harder than Algieri. Chris ought to be ashamed of his sorry sissy fights. Dude was landing flush on Amir Khan and even Khan just ate it and walked through him.
Reminds me of eubank jnr. His not feather fisted and his punches will inflict physical damage just its not power which will stop an opponent coming forward. At the same time Haney is nowhere near as bad as this forum seems to believe and at 22 there is still room to improve. Whether he loses to the other top guys he doesn't get wiped out and is competitive vs them all.
He couldn't punch himself out of a wet cardboard box Saying that though he'll probably develop some pop when he stops draining himself down to 135
He is thin boned. If people usually have thin wrists and small brachial muscles it is usually a sign they are "naturally" skinny.
Some skinny fighters are enough damaging. If they are precise (!), enough fast and especially if catch opponent on counters effectively, such fighters might have not bad stoppages %.
Wilder doesn't have a small frame. Hes actually a naturally large man. He has no bodyfat and a 36 inch waist. His core is wide as hell. Hes got 8 inch wrists. And hes 6'7. Hes a big guy with absolutely zero muscle mass on his legs. That's why he looks so weird. Hes a huge guy with toothpick legs.
At top level his lack of power will eventually hurt him. If Linares is saying after the fight you have no power... then you have no power. Teo, Davis and the rest will walk through him, he has nothing to keep them off.
I think this is a problem. Haney holds a lot of similarities to Floyd in terms of style. But Floyd had just enough power to stop guys in their tracks and make them think twice. Floyd wasn't a huge puncher, but he could take guys out if they got reckless. Haney doesn't have that in his arsenal. I think he can do well at 135 though. But to be truly great, he'll need to win titles at 140 and 147. I just don't see that happening. You need to be able to wear guys down so you can decisively win the second half of fights. That is something Haney needs to work on. He is young though so he has plenty of time to get this right.
