I think the Weaver who fought Holmes and Tate had better than a puncher's chance. Tyson-level power, and he could be a sneaky *******. He also wasn't a bad boxer at all. He certainly ranks as a significantly better fighter than Earnie...more than likely (during the time abovementioned) better than Witherspoon ever was, really. I'm not sure even prime Spoon would have stopped 1981 Coetzee, and I'm positive the Spoon who gave past-it Holmes hell wouldn't have done near as well as Weaver in 1979.

I'm not sure I'd bet on Weaver, but even a prime Holmes with the flu had a MAJOR hard time with him. And I'm not sure Wlad was ever quite as good as Larry from that period.

Oh yes there is, because if he tried it he would look like he was shot if Wlad hit him flush. Sam Peters was a durable guy.

I can't believe I have point this out....

but Cobb was shot to s&it when he was blown out by Collier in 1985.

He took dozens of flush shots from Norton and Shavers like it was nothing.

Sure they were slipping but the still had their power. Shavers exhausted himself pounding on Cobb.

Tex Cobb was not a great boxer. But the man had an iron chin.

The consensus may say yes because Larry Holmes adversaries were not Jack In The Bean Stock proportions. I think I will pass on this thread.

Norton was never renowned for being a huge puncher, and was past his best anyway. Cobb was in his early 30s against Collier, hardly ancient and fighters frequently retain their durability even when faded like Holyfield against Lewis. So yeah the Collier blowout should be considered when assessing his chin.

Shavers was stopped by Mercado in his prior fight and Mercado hardly possesses great durability

Well, given that Witherspoon beat Holmes, even if the judges saw it differently, he might well have beaten Wlad.

And weaver could punch. He s a dangerous foe for Klitch, he's capable as well at pulling out a Ko late on in a fight.

I must have missed that fight. The fight I saw between Witherspoon and Holmes had the former winning before he blew the last three rounds...because he thought he'd already won it.

Holmes won that fight, though to be completely honest I've only had him ahead two points each time I've watched it.

Spoon himself admitted to Larry right after the final bell that he'd lost. It was only the crowd that started swaying him.

Spoon was only, seriously impressive in the 9th round imo...and even then, Larry came back at him as hard as he could.

    The Williams fight was closer.

Man, I love watching that first round. Larry acts just like a matador to Shavers' bull. I think he just got arrogant in the 7th and brought his guard down...but WOW did he get back up take care of business. He looked like he'd die before he lost his title.

Still, this begs the question, does Holmes go through Wlads resume undefeated ? Povetkin, Joshua and Fury are the true threats to Holmes with Tyson Fury being the toughest fught obviously. Holmes takes it in a decision though
