I think Ali would have been the most popular Heavyweight in any era from the 60's on.

Tyson, cause he's far more exciting as a boxer.
A part of what made Ali great was his exploits outside the ring. Nowadays we have too many woke idiots that would not like Ali.

    Ali

He had the touch with children. And kings. And queens. And intellectuals. And slow minded. And capitalist. And communist. And Muslim. And Christian. And white collar. And blue collar.

Didn't he call a man down from suicide?

Ali was an anti-war, anti-racist, anti-capitalist radical Islamic socialist. He was just about the wokest person who ever lived.

Tyson attracted the people of the 80s 90s and even the modern fan because he was not pretty, he was from the people, he was from the dirt he was flawed, self destructive, angry and very human. Ali was pretty, middle class and cheeky he hid his sins well and was comical. You could let your kids watch him talk he was more WWE wrestler then boxer under the camera. He had cute poems and always put on family friendly entertainment he introduced the entire world to boxing with his fun charismatic personality but I have a feeling today Tyson would be more popular. Muhammad is to old school to appeal as sad as that is for me to say.

People would find a way to dislike him for not dating a trans or something. I hate this generation glad I grew up in the country.

Ali ran like a gazelle up there to save that man (0:33).

I appreciate your truthful posts, it is sad for me to say, in present times some youngsters have no morals or the appreciation of things. They do not respect their elders, they do not have manners, and if you notice on this site many are looking for a confrontation behind a keyboard, which to me is not how things are settled in a manly mature manner. I say this because many of you younger folks call it, Old School, it was by far better. Bad morals and virtues, resulted from neglectful parents who were too immature to have children in the first place, no guidance or direction. Nowadays younger people are reliant on mommy and daddy, we were not, we were taught the value of money and self respect. I am sure that there were problems in my era. Muhammad Ali's parents had children in the early 1940's, Mike Tyson's parents had him in the turbulent 1960's probably during Ali's first title reign. But with all due respect my friend, there is a generation gap. We raised our 20 year old son with old school values, he is a great son, love him very much.

Kamikaze you have some very engaging posts, but I fear you have become the mirror-image of the sterotypical overly politically correct character.
Which is reactionary, not parsing the details of which side is correct in what specific matters & respects, & choosing a one-sided Trbal alliance: My side all good, the caricature I create of the other-or choosing the extremists on both sides to represent everyone on one side of the political or other spectrum.

Nobody is hated for anything like not dating a "trans", or by the healthy & sane for say being straight.
Ali has so many great characteristics, & some things that *should* be accepted would be less so.

But you can see he had some *insane* indea(l)s that he always got a pass on.
Like the surreal footage of him speaking at a Klan/KKK rally in favor of segregation, Ali the honored guest lol!
Such as his Playboy Interview where he endorsed such notions as *murdering* among his people for dating outside his race.
That was as late as 1975. To my knowledge he never recanted, just like he never publicly-or privately face to face-apologized to his good friend Joe Frazier, who he was deeply cruel to. Whose kids needed bodyguards due to him. Who he perpetuated vicious racist sterotypes about while pretending to be the more authentic black man.

Frazier who intervened at the highest level (with Nixon) to try to get him his boxing license back.
Frazier who gave him money when he was banished & hard up.
Fuhgettibout his sins of the flesh-is it false he got involved with a 13 year old girl?

Now Ali in person, & privately was a generous, non-racist, loving guy.
But he was married to some insane ideology, & had some serious personal flaws to go along with his marked virtues & larger than life Greatness.

My heart and mind would want Ali, because he was a very great man.

But people tend to like bad boys....

Excellent post. I concede on my word of hatred that is to strong a word.
On this KKK speech and Playboy interview. Do you have links to any of this, this sounds interesting.
He was a little odd honestly like most top fighters I don't doubt any of this is true as much as we love our great boxers too few at the elite level are truly what we could consider normal.

Thank you for the good words Kamikze!
You are less inflexible in some ways than I realized if you can realize overstatements, or tribal emotions (on any side) getting the better of you.
Odd is not necessarily bad-& besides the risk of brain damage, i dunno if boxers are worse.
But being unusual can be a serial killer or a Buddha-or just different.

Regarding the information...A simple Google search shows ample evidence.
Perhaps first see the 5th link below, the Boston Globe article. Ali's views on race were really backwards & bad, I understated them a bit.
Although again i think in real life he was immeasureably better than (some of the) insane beliefs he was married to.
In that sense he was not that integrated of a personality. I stmbled into a meaningful pun ha ha!

You can see the Klan rally info right off the bat, Ali's son saying he would not support black lives matter. Actually I find several things probelmatic about that video & conclusions, we could discusss...And an insiprational video about an inspirational black man who essentially collected KKK robes via getting to know members, see him as human beings, and 200 + LEFT the Klan! Somewhere you will find Ali actually speaking at their rally too.

Ali shouldn't get a pass just because he's Ali. His treatment of Joe was appalling.
