I am both a Tyson and Lewis fan and hated this fight. Mike was always going to have problems with a skilled, aggressive superheavy who played at distance. Lewis was something of a unicorn. And Tyson by this point could maintain 2 rounds of effective action. After that, it was a wing and a prayer.
I think Lennox ageing like wine is a bit of a joke TBH he was KO'd by Rahman in his "Prime" and Oliver in his youth.
Lol, i like how Lenny and his fans jump to the excuse its the heavyweight division, it happens, anyone can knock down anyone with one punch when the likes of Foreman, Holmes, Holyfield, Tyson have proven it on numerous occasions where they have comfortably taken big shots on the face even when being blinded.
Mike was done. Lewis' wins against top rated, relatively young dudes like Briggs, Vitali, and Golota were real title defenses. I don't see Mike as having been a solid contender this century, to be blunt. It was kind of a "well Holyfield did that twice already" non-event for me. I didn't even watch it when it happened. I knew Lewis would take him out. I was a little surprised it took that long...I actually felt very sorry for Mike during that fight. It was one of the examples where he showed heart, but to me it got a bit like torture porn after the 3rd round, he was getting hurt in there and looked terrible imo. I have great respect for Lennox, but I don't think he would have lasted 5 against 80s Mike. Even the Steward Lewis.
LMAO he has more wins than just a shot Tyson. Mike Tyson fans that wont give Lewis his dues are ignorant fools that claim prime Mike Tyson beats everyone in history. Their the same people that started claiming every excuse under the sun when Holyfield taxed that ass even though before the fight they claimed Holyfield stood no chance
Tyson in his prime would have KOed Lewis. Even a green Vitali was beating Lewis. Lewis knows he did not beat the best Tyson, he was no where near his peak. It was a win, and Tyson was still dangerous for about 2-3 rounds. Holyfield faced a much better version of Tyson and Tyson was still well on the way down from his peak. Vitali vs Tyson would be a fantastic fight.
No one. He beat em all. Simple as that. Doesn't matter how old they were or how they didn't measure up to certain standard s, at the end of the day he was the last man standing. Can't do no more than that.
Lenny at the end of the day is just a boxer relegated to the small footnotes of history whereas Tyson is a global icon and brand to be remembered for generations to come. Even Lewis to this day yearns for the Tyson level fame and recognition
Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali will always be the known legends of the sport and will be recognizable to causuals instantly but real boxing historians will respect Lennox Lewis for generations to come and his achievements. H2H a prime Lennox Lewis is arguably the best heavyweight in history
A green Vitali ? Are you stupid ? By the Lewis fight he had racked up over 30 victories and almost all of them came by way of KO/TKO. Lewis was past it and he still won lmao
Plus the fact that Lennox did n't turn pro until he was two months short of his 24th birthday thus having far less wear and tear on his body than Tyson did. I always thought that Lennox could have stopped Mike a few rounds earlier than he did. He clearly wanted to administer a drawn out punishment to his opponent. And who can blame him after Tyson trying to get at Lewis' genitalia at a press conference ?
Tyson still had enough in him to KO Etienne in the next fight, so perhaps a '76 Ali is more comparable. And Tyson fans don't give anyone any dues for beating Tyson. Just tons of excuses.
Etienne was an absolute bum, that was also a lucky punch, Tyson was swinging wildly in that fight and missing all his punches except for the one that landed on a very weak chin. The next two fights against more avg opponents showed he was truly finished
