Glad you have things turned around.

I met a guy who was just out of prison after 10 or 15 years for killing someone in a fight in an alcoholic rage. He was telling his story and had gotten sober. As he put it, referring to the fight he doesn’t remember that left someone dead: “They don’t let that **** go.” Said it still haunts him and the prison time was actually a blessing because it got him out of the life he was living and allowed him to get straight.

Pretty powerful stuff, as is your story. Thanks for sharing it.

I remember reading about Holyfield’s preparation for the first fight.

One thing they did was ‘rehearse’ the first 30 seconds, knowing Tyson would come rushing out bombing. So they sparred endless 30-second ‘rounds’ having the sparring partner bum rush him, unload everything, then call time after 30 seconds and back it up to do it again.

One of the Holyfield training team (I forget who, was he with Don Turner by this time?) said it was a disaster day after day, Evander just wasn’t responding the way they wanted and he’d get nailed with clean shots every time. Then, like 2 weeks before the fight, it all clicked and he started handling it — pivot and jab, then step in and back Tyson up. And from that point on he never had a problem with it.

They also worked on Evander sticking his front foot between Tyson’s feet in close so, as they put it, ‘your left knee is right below his balls.’ This had the effect of squaring Tyson up on the inside and also when Evander pushed to back Tyson up … Mike had no way to stop from being pushed back because his back foot was never back on the inside. If your feet are squared up and someone pushes you, you either give ground or topple over on your ass.

A lot of strategy in that fight that gets overlooked.

WOW you have had some life!
I am guessing you are grateful you are healthy & alive.
You give that cop real credit lol! And likely identify with Sonny Liston & what the police put him through.
I did not reach that level of strength, especially for legs-even if that is with wraps/belts & maybe a squat suit, that is impressive.
But I o not have the genetics for it. Did you use PEDs (which can change your potential at the cellular level ven later when you are clean), & if so did it ad to your rage?

I know people would like to hear your music, as I do, if'n you want to share!

Couldn’t tell you other than it was shortly after the first fight. Maybe one of the boxing mags or Sports Illustrated or something.

I've been offered PEDs but was scared to death of losing my hair and shrinking testes! lol

I've been lifting for 40 years, so naturally it paid off.

At 15 I loved boxing more than anything. I used to work on having a Larry Holmes jab (complete with that venom-spitting sound the Champ made when throwing it) and George Foreman's devastating power punches. I would run 6 miles every other day, 6 rounds of the speed bag...but my favorite was the heavy bag (after seeing Big George pound it with Sadler holding on for dear life my own life was changed LOL!).

I have a killer punch but found that boxers strong enough to hold me and move well jabbed my brains out. So, there weren't any amateur or pro pretensions. Just loved the training, and watching my favorites. 1981 I never missed Hagler, Duran, Leonard, Larry, the awesome light heavies of the time, Sanchez, Prior, Arguello. I LOVED all of them, and let's not forget how many amazing contenders were around in practically all the divisions back then.

The music sharing...maybe in the future. I like being kind of incognito, and I like a LOT of people on this forum. There's a ton of great knowledge going on here.

I write Wagnerian symphonies, opera, 21st century classical music, a tiny bit of film stuff. And every now and then I release an album harkening back to the music I loved very young like Deep Purple, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Dio.

Everyone sure has been nice about reading all this boring junk about me lol. I should hand out caffeine pills!

Holyfield had studied Tyson and his style religiously for so many years. He made sure he was ready for the big day and boy he was

Yeah Turner was his trainer then. His sparring partners were Gary Bell and David Tua for the most part.

No squat suit or bench shirt. I do use a heavy powerlifting belt for all my lifts, and knee wraps for squats.

You might try creatine-loading for an extra edge, and try to eat plenty of red meat. There are good protein supplements, but I usually just make steak or hamburgers, roasts. That's how you put on a whole bunch of muscle and strength. And if you're really, mostly aiming for strength try not to overdo the cardio.

Thanks so much for your gracious words.

You are very welcome man! :)

I know those basics for ever by cracky thanks! I do not believe in Creatine, since unlike with say protein powder-or the creatine you can get from red meat-the quantity taken far exceeds what one can get naturally from the body, or in this case the diet. So while that would increase strength-in part from shoving in more water which in turn allows you to lift more & get stronger-that (smaller than effective PEDs) to me is not natural & possibly unhealthy.

I believe I virtually maximized my upper body strength at least, & I will bet that while we are both ~ 6', you have a thicker bone structure than I do, permitting adding more total muscle.
I doubt your wrists are only between 7" & 7 a 1/2" (at the narrowest point) like mine!

While only my bench press is *way* down from my best, it is funny that at ~ 225 dressed I can a bit do more deep diips than ever, even compensating for being lighter than my max. Normally I hit at least 1 set of 26, occasionally 30, with a wide grip a couple times 32.
Even though they hit the same pushing muscles as benches.

I have asked a 100 times from the "experts" here who dont even know how to wrap hands...............but never get a answer.

According to the "experts". spending four years in jail during your physical prime........fight a handful of stiffs when out for a grand total of LESS than a dozen rounds COMBINED, train for roughly three weeks in Vegas while travelling/partying and fighting the Rooney Lawsuit in NY.................then facing a ACTIVE Pro top 3 fighter with top notch PED consumption, fact, who never took a break in his career................is the recipe that said fighter has the other fighters number ten out of ten.................

Douglas simply laid down for hair Loss PED fighter..........got almost ko'ed by a legitimate, RIP. crack head..........struggled with two fossils....and was beaten from pillar to post by the first talented fresh, still , green, fighter he ran into....fact.

Of course, expert 101, above fighter beats said fighter 10 out of ten.......

Now, for the simple minded "experts" ....................reverse the fighters.............does bald PED fighter still beat said fighter ten out of ten while sitting in the can for 4, fight some set ups for a handful of rounds and meet said ACTIVE fighter on top of his craft?

Waiting for a answer................a known intellectual like Johnny "Beerbelly" Thomaschensky will voice his expert commentary shortly.....might even be rewarded with a Keg.
