    - Floyd Mayweather never lost in the ring. Ali lost five times

    - Floyd Mayweather stepped out of his comfort zone to beat champions in other divisions. Ali never had to do this.

    - Floyd was kicking ass in his late 30’s while Ali was basically finished by age 36 and in some cases needing help from judges.

    - Floyd had a record of something like 25-0 in world title fights while Ali’s was 19-3.

As highly as I think k of Muhammad Ali and rank him #1 at heavyweight, I think people often rank him on charisma.

The test for greatness is: who do you beat, if you lose do you win the rematch, and when and how do you win or lose?
In this field, Muhammad Ali is easily the greater fighter by far.
Rocky Marciano, who unlike floyd, defended his title against EVERY 1# contender during his career and retired undefeated. Would you Rank Marciano higher than Ali? Of course NOT.
    In Ali’s case there were 22 top fighters, 10 or 9 of them in the Hall of Fame, during his era, and he fought them all, beating 21 of 22 at least once;
Compare that to undefeated Floyd Mayweather, who ducked 80% welterweights during his decade plus in that class, and for his 50th win, fought a complete amateur, and then ran his mouth about how he had made history.

Greatness is about more than just how good one can perform when at his best.
I see a prime Tyson as the best heavyweight that's ever lived ability wise. But I do not see him as a top 5 heavyweight in terms of greatness cause he did not fulfill his potential, he wasted his career.
Now going back to Mayweather, I rank him top 10 in terms of how good he was at his best and in terms of greatness, but more towards the lower end in this department

Here is where I take some mortar fire…both of them are overrated. Before you start shooting, allow me to explain. By overrated I mean they received accolades that were above and beyond their given talent or accomplishments. Not that they weren’t good or possibly great fighters, that is a separate argument. But when you measure the degree of praise and recognition they receive in relation to their actual ability or accomplishment they come out overrated.

Was Ali truly “the greatest”? Hardly. He had a lot of technical flaws as a boxer, and several gift decisions that went in his favor. He was good for ratings, whether you loved him or hated him, people tuned in. He carried boxing through the transition of boxing clubs to television. To his credit he never ducked anyone and he fought other prime fighters at their best. He also fought a lot of overmatched, smaller, and older fighters too. Shouting “I am the greatest” into every microphone and camera and having Cosell on your side certainly helped to make him a household name to casual fans who bought it hook, line and sinker.

Floyd calls himself “TBE”, is he really the best ever? Not a chance. Hence the overrated claim. He never fought one elite level opponent at their very best, not one. Sorry, but Corrales was not elite level for those who are still clinging to that win. Canelo was young and green, PAC was injured and lost a step in the six years Floyd chose to marinate the fight to make it bigger while avoiding Manny at his best. Oscar was at the end of his career and arguable was robbed, Floyd’s”retired” to avoid a rematch. He also avoided Mosley at 135, and several other dangerous fights. His own trainer insists he is afraid to lose.

I also don't see how he "ducked" Wright, who was several weight classes above. And critisising him for giving Maidana is a bit rich since he's otherwise be critisised for not doing so.

I don't think you can compare Floyd's title fights with Ali's, since Ali's were for the undisputed title.

In terms of wins over ranked opp Ali is way ahead of Floyd. I think he has more wins against top 5 ranked contenders than Floyd has against top 10 ranked.

Indeed, because Ali probably wasn't the greatest of all time.

But he was far closer than Mayweather could ever dream of being.

Because Mayweather doesn't even belong in the top 20?

Perhaps because he called Wright out and then wussed out once Wright and his team agreed to his demands.
