I agree completely. But my whole point was that higher ranked boxers don't necessarily have a better chin, they usually are ranked higher cause they happen to be more skilled.

Higher ranked fighters are better in every department on average. There's no doubt that the top 10 tend to have far better chins than say, fighters ranked 291-300. If you have a glaring vulnerability like that at the top level, it gets exposed sooner rather than later. Even AJ doesn't have a weak chin when compared to chinny journeymen like Eric Molina or Audley Harrison.

Not necessarily, no... But it often means they've been in with more of the other big hitters of the day as well.

Now you're taking things to the extreme with this comparison, by using the guys ranked 291-300. Why no compare the top 10 with the guys ranked say 21 to 30 ? IMO their chins won't be that different.

I agree they are lacking in all other areas, but I was only talking about chins.

Because Wilder wasn't fighting guys ranked in the top 30 until his 33rd fight, he was fighting guys on the fringes of the top 300 or below. Therefore those KO's are of dubious value to say the least.

How do you truly measure Wilders power when all he’s fought is white collar boxers, tomato cans and bum of the month wannabes who had no intention of staying up once they got hit and found the canvass a nice place to be for at least 10 seconds or more.

    Wilders resume is dog tish

You are absolutely correct that if someone does not land as clean their power will not tend to be as notable.
Foreman was both better overall, more accurate-& Ali was slower & more vulnerable by the time he faced Shavers in late 1977.

But from what I understand *everyone* who ever faced Shavers said he hit harder.
Whether they beat him or lost. There are very colorful quotes by some of them.
Ali. Holmes. Bugner. Norton. Tillis. Caldwell. Young. Cobb. Lyle. Ellis. Young.

He had both the heavy & huge hands of a Foreman, + disproportionately long arms & wide sholders like Liston to flong a Wrecking ball.
He was also very explosive, without being particularly fast overall.
His training including chopping wood helped maximize power.

At least for his size-& possibly compared to most if not all Superheavyweights even in absolute terms...

Shavers seems to have hit the hardest.

Do you have the slightest idea who Shavers fought in his first 33 fights? (LOL)

Earnie couldn't even beat them all. Earnie lost to Stan Johnson and got knocked out by Ron Stander, for God's sake.

Wilder has knocked out everyone he's faced as a pro but the current 270-pound World Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury, who he's had down twice already and is fighting again next month. If he knocks out Fury, he'll have stopped everyone he's fought.

Shavers didn't stop Stan Johnson (Earnie lost), Ron Stander (Earnie got stopped), Vicente Rondon (a light heavy), Jerry Quarry (Earnie got stopped), Bob Stallings (Earnie lost), Ron Lyle (Earnie got stopped), Tex Cobb (Earnie got stopped), Bernardo Mercado (Earnie got stopped), Ali Haakim, Quick Tillis (Earnie lost), Walter Santemore (Earnie lost), Rahim Muhammad, Brian Morgan, George Chaplin (Earnie lost), Brian Yates (Earnie lost) ...

Granted, Wilder fought his fair share of Stan Johnsons, Ron Standers and Bob Stallings, but he sure as hell didn't go the distance and freaking LOSE or get KNOCKED OUT by them like Earnie did. If Wilder was going the distance with journeymen like Stallings or losing to people like Stander, think of how much garbage would get heaped on him.

Wilder hasn't outweighed an opponent in nine years and was wasting everyone and Earnie was losing to 180 pound nobodies.

    Wilder is the bigger puncher.

    A helluva lot.

    He is. Very good summary.
You posted a detailed version of what I wrote above. Shavers >> than Wilder as a person and he was in many exciting fights. You most often got you moneys worth w/Earnie. He often KOd his opponent - or lost by KO. But as I posted and you detailed, ES was in an era of much smaller "big men". He also had an average engine (if that) and a suspect chin. I've been posting this for 14 years here - too much nostalgia bias.

Read my other posts in this thread, I've said that Wilder is the far bigger puncher. I've even noted that Shavers was a bigger can crusher than Wilder. These facts get memory holed because of "golden age" nostalgia.
