Revisionists have been kind to Larry Holmes. He was not so revered in the 80's. What fighter today do you will assume a similar path? { history will be kind}
Hopkins Canelo Lewis Calzaghe Estrada Wladimir Their standing and how people view them will all go up over time, IMO. Some of them already have.
Steve Collins is one. I don't see were all the praise is coming from, he was nothing but a runner up at mw and he never impressed me at smw.
Too right. In 1978 you may have had the yeah he is good, but no Ali brigade around, but he was highly rated by the mid 80s; and when the decade was reviewed in 1990, it went Holmes and Tyson.... and then the rest!
EXACTLY!!!!! HAPPY FATHER'S DAY FROM THE FLETCHER FAMILY TO ALLLLL THE FATHERS OUT THERE. YOU MADE IT A HAPPY FATHER'S DAY FOR MANY. JUNE 20, 1982.FATHERS DAY.
Not sure if you were following boxing in the 80s...... Holmes was crucified for not fighting Dokes, Coetzee, Page. I know politics had much to do with this......But if you were around -----press and boxing pundits thought he was a temporary champ. I always admired his skills and above all----his ability to fight when hurt. Squeezing the mouse? Please sir.....
I was around and following boxing in the 1980s (and the ‘70s for that matter). He was criticized. He was not roundly ‘crucified.’ He was fighting on prime time network television for many of his defenses and they did not spend most of those broadcasts acting like he was a pretender. Page was probably the one he was criticized most for not fighting and before that gained much steam Page got beat and I never heard a peep. And he signed to fight Coetzee (twice maybe?) but the money fell through. I don’t remember anyone suggesting he should have fought him for free. Dokes — he’s the guy who was criticized in winning the title (bad stoppage) and in the dubiousness of the draw in the rematch with Weaver (whom Holmes had beaten) and I never once heard that Holmes was ducking him. He was regarded as a possible future opponent and he took himself out of the equation. The ‘lost generation’ of guys basically would win a title and lose it in the first defense. None gained enough traction or held onto a belt long enough for any outcry that Holmes should fight them to unify. They pissed their titles away before the general public knew who they were.
Absolutely not. Wish I was wrong. Defenses against Frank, Cobb, Zanon, Frazier ,Ledoux, Leon Spinks did nothing for the media. Big Holmes fan but at that young age could not grasp why he was so criticized. Maybe not by those "who knew". Go back and read the boxing mags of those days. They were not too kind to Larry. And....he knew it. Rocky quote sums up what he felt was unfair treatment
Find me one instance or source from any of the above-mentioned fights where Larry Holmes was referred to as a “temporary champion” as you claimed. There aren’t any. Only criticism of the Cobb fight was that he beat Tex up so bad.
