Stacey Selby vs. Wiliam Floyd Parra-Smith, 4 rounds @ super lightweight

 

Round 1

Parra-Smith jabbing the body to get inside and laying a ponderous right cross against the chest and left shoulder of Selby, just short of his chin, not enough follow-through as the young prospect jerks backward. Quick but lumpy jabs put out by the precocious teen, not really focusing on aim, just sort of backhanding Parra-Smith away, setting up heavy right hands delivered in straight, looping, and overhand fashion. Parra-Smith able to dart in and out effectively to close the round with light jabs and straight right leads.

Round 2

Parra-Smith begins well, forcing Selby to retreat into the ropes under constant fire with straight combos and keeping a tight high guard to screen out counters, but eventually Selby is able to exploit a gap as Parra-Smith eases up for a rest, and reverses position with him. Once he is spun against the ropes Parra-Smith is bombarded with looping rights, uppercuts, and wide left hooks. Selby is throwing home run shots, nothing set up with the jab and not conserving energy, clearly thinking KO here rather than decision. He chases Parra-Smith across the ring, lumping out jabs in the vicinity of his face and tickling him with a long right cross.

This will be Selby's first time professionally seeing round three.

 

Round 3

Parra-Smith is getting overpowered now by Selby throwing hooking volleys with both hands, digging especially hard into the ribs but also pounding up on the neck and temples of his opponent. Selby carries his left arm in a low swinging cradle by his own lead hip, advancing upon Parra-Smith and pausing only to raise his guard when Parra-Smith throws his own desperate hooking combos to stave him off. Selby keeps walking him down and leading with power shots, finally threading a needle with a looping right between Parra-Smith's gloves and dropping him awkwardly onto a single knee. He shoots up but looks wobbly and the ref waves it off.

In with a former longtime contender (and onetime challenger for the WBA featherweight championship) in Jaguarcito! Tough ask, but if he pulls it off he will have a huge upset on his pro ledger as well as skirting a drop to a .500 record (currently 17-16-2 with 11 kayos).

 

Did anybody else watch that show opener via Instagram live? I'm not sure what to make of Selby... powerful yes, for a 19 year old in particular but he's technically quite poor and he looks more heavy-handed than explosive. I doubt he will enjoy as many kayos (or success period) as he steps up in class...Tank might have a dud investment there. Or who knows, maybe today just wasn't the full realization of his current or hint of his future potential.
