If he had applied himself correctly and lived the life

I think he got around to where he would have done had he lived the life. Half of what made him good was his recklessness and sheer balls to stand there take one to land one style.

His technical flaws would have always let him down. Maybe with some very careful matchmaking he could have won a European belt or even challenged for the world title but he was always a few steps behind. He was focussed and on his game going into the Alvarez fight who was fringe at best, and was comfortably beaten there.

He beat a guy who went on to win a portion of the world title. Maybe matched correctly he might have been able to do that himself.

The highlight was the cracking demolition of plastic world champion Alex Arthur and he would have been in with a chance of becoming a World Champion if fighting for a vacant title or facing a non elite champion.

That fight was probably the best British title fight I have seen on Sky Sports.

It was a blinder one of my favourite fights of all time. I liked Gomez, the moment he dropped Khan I was willing him to finish it.

Loved his demolition of Alex Arthur, hyped up to be something special, turned out to be effective as the Scotland national football team.

I loved Alex Arthur as a fighter but I dont think he ever properly recovered from that fight. I think Gomez permanently removed that spark that Arthur looked to have early on in his career. Still achieved more than 99% of our fighters which is a real credit to Alex, but I dont think he got near to his potential.

Gomez was a beast in that night - it really was an amazing fight to watch. Think it was the second round when Alex boxed his ears off, then got another left hook in the 3rd and decided to throw away his skills and fight. Amazing stuff from Gomez.

I reckon gomez could have been a top fighter if he lived the life. Was he not reported as being better than hatton in the early days. Not sure if true...but could he have had a similar career if he was sensible with it.

People have to remember the kind of lifestyle gomez lived. Thats a massive part of what you,ll go on to achieve. He done well considering...but your looking at twice or three times the fighter if he was living the life with it imo.

Good domestic, Euro and possibly fringe world level contender but could never have won a world title in that era when you look at the champions at 130 and 135 - Mayweather, Corrales, Casamayor, Freitas, Castillo etc.
If Gomez were at his peak today he probably would have got at least one shot at one the major alphabet titles but during the early 2000's it was just too stacked with legit top level talent

Great fighter and a great guy.

People live the life if they can, but when you can't it makes things harder.

Mike never had the best of starts in life, but he was always a great kid, he always was trying to provide something to keep him and his fed from such a young age.

The Funniest day of my life was when i arrested him!!

I think the Gomez who beat Alex Arthur would have walked through Amir Khan, but they didn't fight until 5 years later when Gomez was washed up.
