As a boxer I never saw much in him. Others wiser then I do did. Who am I to question someone like Steward, Tyson or Futch but as a man I respect his will to live. He struggled till his last day and touched so many lives with his infectious misery. You could say he finally died when Foreman lost in Zaire or when Tyson had his last stare down and left the final flower at his grave. He cast a large shadow in death the champ nobody wanted truly became the herald for the bad men of boxing. An omen to ferocity and intimidation more so then any other. But for all the gloom, the fear and brutality he was as his grave read “A man” A man who saw and showered his unwanted secret son with gifts, He who sat quietly with a priest he loved for forgiveness A man who selflessly mentored the young whom looked up to him, a mistake but what are living role models but a work in progress.
Take out any dealings with adults and Sonny might have been the most likeable champ ever. I get that's a huge caveat but the adult world was mean to Sonny long before he bit back.
the temerity you have to respond to me with stupid **** , you are wrong and you are going on the ignored member list now!
Hmm? I wonder why Elmer spent most of this fight running for his life against a fighter with such flaws? and didn't Liston stop him in this fight? Elmer wasn't a bad fighter and had a draw against Eddie Machen. He finished his career 16-6-2 and lost 5 of his last 7. One other thing not mentioned, this fight happened when 1967? Liston was probably 40, or older if you believe Emanuel Steward .
Elmer was an awful fighter he had similar flaws that liston had (head over front foot) and his inside fighting was all kinds of bad (you dont put a guard up in the infighing ,its not static like that . You guys are something else the film doesnt lie, yes liston beat his competition with those glaring flaws, his competition was worse. Age has nothing to do with this stuff, his matches from 58 you can see a jab with too much weight on the front foot(leaves you open when you MISS) a right to the body thats just thrown with no setup (sure it worked on patterson cuz his dumbass ducked every punch so he ducked himself into the shot) didnt work on ali(and that ali pull counter wrecks liston of any age) Joe louis got steamrolled from schmeling for being too front foot heavy on the jab(not hands up) he was pulled off balance by the pull counter , Liston you dont even have to pull counter him ,he jabs himself off balance, just a crude overrated mess liston was.
Age has nothing to do with it? well perhaps you can post the Ali Holmes fight where Larry exposes all of Ali's flaws and steamrolls him.
Liston went further with a bad corner than anyone I can think of. Try subtracting the great corners almost all of the heavyweight champs had. Insert Sonny's corner to them instead.
age has nothing to do with flaws that can be seen from early Liston fights , his jabbing with too much weight on the front foot and not taking proper actions to keep himself safe after the jabs have NOTHING to do with age! do you understand what I am trying to say? I dont think you do.
An awful lot of boxing experts have the same temerity as @White Bomber and they happen to think that Liston's jab was among the best the division has seen. When he beat Patterson he was widely viewed as being invincible and would reign pretty much as long as he liked. Shame you weren't around at the time to bring a bit of reason to it all and point out the obvious stylistic flaws. You'd have shamed those dozens of experts.
